New Player 1st Impressions - Day 1

Post by onatah »

Well I have searched around now for almost 6 months to find a replacement game for SWG and just tried this game for the first time last night. I have spent more money on trying out games in this amount of time then I would have spent for a whole year on a subscription fee.

Download & Installation

Well to start from scratch, the download and installation took a very, very long time. I wish I had downloaded the torrent file now after reading the forum boards and hearing people say that it was more up to date. I thought about trying this game before but each time I downloaded the file it was always missing some portion of it. Come to find out, there were several bad links to get the client from and I just never happened upon the correct one.

Character Creation

My hubby and I both got to the character creation screen at the same time and decided to make a Tryker as our first character. The character creation area was done quite well and you definitely had a chance to make your character unique. Character creation imho is an important feature to any game like this as it just personalizes the experience that much more. Being an ex SWG player I thought we had the best character creation area and after trying to find a replacement nothing much compared. I think the character creation in this game is better then what (NGE) SWG offers. The only character creation that I have seen that beats all the rest hands down is from City of Villains. To bad the game is boring and pretty much quest, hack and slash.

Entering the World

My character was finally created and I could hardly wait to see what this world had to offer so I hit the next button and watched and read the funny things at the top of the screen. The pictures filled in across the bottom of the screen as it ticked closer to completion. My hubby got in ahead of me and was trying to get used to moving around and although I was tempted to go over and look at his screen I waited for my own to load.

Finally the screen loaded but none of the chat boxes had any writing in them except for one that said, “You are running.” In the center of the screen there was a little box that looks kind of like the connection for LAN and it said “Please Wait.”

I asked my hubby if his had done that and when he told me it had not I decided to exit and restart the client. Finally I had loaded in after having restarted the game and the first thing I did was talk to the Welcome NPC. I was told to find a specific person that was in the hut. My hubby was already running all over the place trying to find this same person. We looked around for awhile and also tried out harvesting but then it was time for dinner so we both exited the game.
Revelation

After dinner we decided in order to make the most of the trial period we better check out the other races as well so we created a Matis. The Tryker’s we made to be our crafters since we both enjoyed the crafting aspect, so we decided to make the Matis with an emphasis on fighting. The Welcome NPC instructed me to find a person that was in the tree and that’s when it dawned on me why we couldn’t find the NPC for the Tryker is because we didn’t take the shuttle/teleport/elevator to the trainer. With the Matis its pretty obvious that this was the only tree so that’s why I went inside and just went with the flow of clicking the fighter trainer. While playing the Tryker I looked all around the merchant hut not realizing that I could have used the shuttle/teleport/elevator thing.

Fighting

Don’t have much to say on this as of yet since I am still really trying to figure it all out. I did manage to get to 5/20 in fighting in the short time I played.

Crafting

Since I picked up crafting also on the Matis character I decided to try and make something with all the resources I had from killing those cute ferret looking creatures. I got to the craft screen and was pleasantly surprised with how it was setup. You could be the same level crafter as another player but depending on resource quality and combination it clearly shows that some crafters will be better then others. Its good to see that there is some definite depth to the crafting. I missed being a tailor in the other game but from what I have seen so far of the crafting system here, I will much happier with the complexities and specializations this game has to offer.

Customer Service

After playing for a while on the Matis character my hubby decided to switch back to his first character. He loaded in his Tryker and started to explore and learn while I finished up what I was doing on the other character. I restarted the game and logged onto my first character but had the same thing happen with the message “Please Wait.” I ended up restarting the game about 4 times and finally decided to check out the support system since the other characters worked just fine.

Although I couldn’t see my character and couldn’t move around in the game, I was still able to access the options and support tab. I submitted a problem and then decided I might as well play on the Matis since she appeared to be fine. As soon as the screen loaded I had a private tell from support staff. Needless to say I was in utter shock. After you have had the worst or no customer service/support you kind of don’t know how to act. Well in a nutshell, he fixed my problem and did it in record time. I give customer service an A+.

See you all in game, these are my first impressions. Day 1.

Welcome. ^_^ And good to hear you're enjoying Ryzom.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask here. The community is friendly and helpful (as long as you ignore most of the forum...forums always bring out the worst in people ;) ), and people will trip over each other to help new players. :p

Welcome Raven
You will find quite a few players that have come from SWG. One such group is Trykers and have created a guild named Team Spirit :)
Enjoy your stay on Atys, and I believe you will find most homins are very friendly.

*Tip, try to get training in all 4 skill branches. If you go to the mainland without it, you may find you need 50 skillpoints in another branch to buy it from the trainer*

Welcome to the game, both of you. You'll have a huge advantage in playing both of you as Ryzom is very little about solo (even if this can be done but with piles of patience).

Initially our guild has been the result of moving our guild from SWG (Farstar) here. Now we have members that never been in SWG as well and ex-swg-ers from other galaxies too. If you want to exchange thoughts or ask things or just have company in game (even if the community is everywhere very helpful) feel free to contact me or any of our officers (Jaawa, Spangle, Goupi, Mijom, Eofii) that you find logged in.

Cya and hope Ryzom will be for you a real home as it is for us.

Welcome to our giant Root-Ball! :D

Spend your times on the training islands getting used tothe skill tree, the controls, etc. then hit the mainland where there will be many more homins to interact with and help you. Don't be afraid to talk to anyone, or ask questions in region or around.

Most of all, Have Fun!

Welcome to Ryzom. I am sure you'll be a terrific tailor once you've bought the tailoring (armor) skills and some patterns. If you want to dive into a complex game - crafting is your thing.

(Sorry I missed the whole SWG pre-NGE, it sounds like it was a great game.)
