Hello all
Just started up and runnign around newbland.
At first I was thinking 'well if you can train all skills, wont everyone be do everything supermen?' but as IM progressing Im finding thats not the case...
It seems youc an train all skill branches no problem (Im currently 13 fighter/14 magician/9 crafting/12 harvesting) but you really have to make some tough decisions. The harvesting and crafting tree in particular are nightmares. I want patterns, i want better prospecting options (now nodes are starting to blow up in my face, that 30 point skill to slow that down is looking good). All I can amke are boots, caster pants and earrings. And I still ahve to get my focus bar above 100/starter regen...
So how am i supposed to manage all that? Do you have to be super specialized when it comes to crafting?
And as for the combat side of things, how flexible are you with combat vs casting. I would love to be this armored badass weilding a giant 2 hand mace spraying everyone with acid but is that possible? Conversely, how about if i want to melee every now and then in light armor, will I get eaten up? I like Hybrid type characters with offensive magc, is there any site out there I can play around with some builds/skill trees etc....
Seems like there is a nice amount of depth to this game. I could see myself sticking around here if I get myself the right guild.

Re: New Player (with questions, of course!)
Welcome, and I'm sure you'll get lots more answers to your questions . Also, if you head over to the mainland there are lots of homins there who will be happy to answer and advise.
The short answer is yes, you can train everything but it takes a looong time. As you have found, the choices in harvest and craft are the toughest at first. Harvest gets better once the tree splits at 51 and you can get skill points from multiple branches. The craft tree also splits, but you will never have enough points for everything you want, so pick something and specialize.
As for combat, you can wear armour and cast, but there are stiff penalties. Some mages wear medium armour, which isn't too bad as long as you have a healer keeping your health/sap up. Melee in light armour is also possible (my character Radsul does it all the time) but you won't be able to soak up as much damage, so you have to choose your targets carefully.
... and check the Guild forum (especially the list of guilds sticky) for info on what is available. Take your time and pick the right one .

Welcome to our Great Big Root Ball!!
Spend your newbland time learning the basic skills like how to use the player controls, how to customize your interface, and if you can find a mate to team with how to heal and fight in a team. I usually recommend folks stick around the "island" until they hit level 20 in either magic or melee (with appropriate levels in forage and craft) then head on over to the mainland where there are a lot more Homins (and the Yubos/Gingos/etc hit harder).
Once you hit the mainland, take your time on choosing a guild. Talk to folks (lots of folks), decide what you want in a guild, then choose one. The Guild Forum Guild List referenced by Richky is a good place to get basic info, but there's no subsititute for talking and teaming with folks from various guilds. There's also a couple "stepping stone" guilds that specialize in helping newbies, then help them choose an appropriate guild for the long hall. Emporer's fist is one of those I believe.
BTW, What's your character name and race? (enquiring minds want to know!)
When you get to the mainland, send us a /tell when you have questions. Pretty much everyone here is willing to answer questions and give guidance, and the ever necessary Rez!
Enjoy your life on Atys!

Yeah its all very complex, but please dont worrie too much about it. Its very hard to get yourself stuck. You can always get more points somehow, it'll just take a little bit longer.

Re: New Player (with questions, of course!)
My advice is: go in there and start playing dont worry too much about the details. Your understanding of these will grow automatically while you play.
be open, approach other players, join in on teams, explore the world.. Dont be afraid, you wont be slaughtered for making mistakes in a team (in fact it is not easy to do that at all), dont be afraid to spoil your character by buying the false level upgrades (that is hardly possible).. if you have slaughtered enough of your hometown's city gates yubos ask around if someone is willing to trek you to other places, i'm sure someone will guide you.

Re: New Player (with questions, of course!)
You speak of many things we all experience with SoR. My typical response as far as builds is decide what you want to be when you grow up, then do it.teakbois wrote: I want patterns, i want better prospecting options (now nodes are starting to blow up in my face, that 30 point skill to slow that down is looking good). SP (skill points) will be tough to manage at first if you try and get everything. There are definately things that can wait normally, others you need ASAP. Regardless the skills you want to work, find the gear/items you need to best do them. Many of us fight in LA most of the time, and you will see casters in MA... it's about what works for you. Your gear will help significantly, try and use the best you can at your level for best results.
Enjoy Atys.

Hi ya, welcome to Ryzomteakbois wrote:Hello all

Ok, its a lot more coplex than other games, but its a lot more flexable and fun. Basicaly at the start you only have one crafting tree, and due to the point cost of patterns i recomend you stick to one thing (an armor or weapon type is always a good start)It seems youc an train all skill branches no problem but you really have to make some tough decisions. The harvesting and crafting tree in particular are nightmares.
So how am i supposed to manage all that? Do you have to be super specialized when it comes to crafting?
Then at level 21 it will split up into 4 trees (Armor, Jewlery, Meele and Ranged) gettign a level in any of these will give you 10 craftign skill points, thus you can fairly easaly craft 4 types of items/sets, or, craft two and use the points from the other trees to help with those two.
Then at 51 each of those 4 trees split up again, so you have even more points avalible.
It comes down to how much time you have to put into it
Hope i did not confuse you even more, im not too good at explenations
You can be, but the penaltys are hard. And as for the combat side of things, how flexible are you with combat vs casting. I would love to be this armored badass weilding a giant 2 hand mace spraying everyone with acid but is that possible?
Example (numbers are fictional):
Acid2 dose 50 damage, takes 4 seconds to cast, costs 10 sap and has a range of 40.
With a set of magic amps and in light armor it dose 85 damage, takes 2.5 seconds to cast, costs 10 sap and has a range of 40
With a two handed weapon and heavy armor it dose 50 damage, takes 12 seconds to cast, costs 30 sap and has a range of 10
So you cant stand there nuking, but you definatly can open with a spell or two, or set up a link spell
Yes, you will die a lot faster than if you had heavy armor, unless you fight things that are weaker, or you fight with a partnerConversely, how about if i want to melee every now and then in light armor, will I get eaten up?
How ever you can kill things quicker due to your skills not draining so much stamina
Aye, the game has more depth than a lot of the moden MMO's. And ive yet to hear about a bad guild, so good luckSeems like there is a nice amount of depth to this game. I could see myself sticking around here if I get myself the right guild.
Re: New Player (with questions, of course!)
Thanks for all the replies
I have a Fyros named Harpua. Had toyed around with starting a new toon to make some changes, but I think once i get into the 20s Ill be fine.
Still unsure which route I ultimately want to go, but I dont really have to decide that right away anyway.
