GMs powers

Post by kyesmith »

Just wanted to start a thread on what people thought GMs could and couldnt do, and what people think about it.
Its following a chat i had with a GM and got around to talking about what they could veiw about our game play/char.
An example of their powers is their ability to view how much HP/stamina/sap/focus our char has, and the failure to anwser if they can or cannot log/view what chat we type in what we think to be private channels.
Any thoughts welcome

Interesting question, open to debate and with several opinions. It is not a black or white scenario.

First, stats checking. Yes I would expect a GM to have that power, and I am not surprised they do. They need a set of tools to manage the service, including and not limited to checking a player characteristics, levels, boosting scripts (e.g ATS in some cases) spawning abilities and whatever they may need both for their technical support, CoC enforcement (banning, rooting, jails, mute, etc.) and for event management.

Second, the ability to log klients/IG conversations. From the early days of the first betas in 2004, we were told they did, and I consider them as part of the global logging one may think they do (actions, transfers, etc.) From a player point of view, privacy is of course of concern. Yet I understand the reasons a MMRPG service provider can have to do so: not only for operating the service (tracking lost items, bugs, dupes, exploits, hacks, etc.) but also for more serious ones. With our "contract" with Nevrax, we play using their infrastructure and they may be liable for our acts - although limited - the same way IRC operators can be liable for illegal activities. I guess in some cases they may need to produce some proof if requested. That said, I wouldn't think they use these logs regularly.

Stat stuff, makes sense. Also chat logging or viewing makes sense too. I can think of a couple differant scenarios (harassment for one) where they'd need to be able to make sure of things said in a chat. Doesn't bother me.

I'm on their server, I expect they can monitor me in every way possible.

Ah i remember they used to have the power to boost whatever we asked them to boost in focus. If we had to be a certain level somewhere to hunt mobs we could simply ask a GM to boost all our levels and they'd do something and suddenly a hell of a lot of lag and XP scrolling up the screen. I remember a certain Gm whos still about that ported me to 3 of the newb lands after i was already on main land.

Slightly off topic, did anyone in beta make a Matis character that started on fyros newbland and ported to Pyr mainland?

Kye we've been asking after you on our forums, you make it on rf?
