Hey all!

I've heard a lot of good things about this game, and in 35 minutes and 12 seconds I will be installing and logging in for the first time :)

Does anyone have any character creation/general tips you would like to share for someone new to SoR?

When choosing starter packs, take 1 magic, 1 forage, and 1 craft. :) Fight is basically a free skill because you can just punch yubos to get exp in it; all the fight start pack gives you is a dagger. If you quarter everything you kill, and take all you forage, and sell it to the NPC merchants, you can save up enough dappers (money) to buy a dagger which is likely better than the one you would've gotten from the start pack.

The most important skill to learn from the NPC trainers is Constitution. Each Constitution upgrade increases your HP by 50. Metabolism is HP regeneration rate. Strength is Stamina and relates to fight, Balance is its regen. Intelligence relates to magic, Wisdom is its regen. Dexterity relates to foraging and crafting, Will is its regen.

You can see all of those stats by pressing P and looking at the top-right panel in the Identity window that comes up.

Constitution determines what quality of armor you can wear, with the exception of light armor, which is your highest skill +25.
Heavy armor: Const +10
Medium armor: I'm not sure, someone fill in?

Strength determines what quality of weapon you can wield.
All weapons = Str +10

Intelligence determines what quality of magic amplifier gloves you can use.
All amps(magic amplifiers) = Int +10

You can see your skill levels by pressing A.

Don't stay on the island too long, it doesn't represent the entire game, and you can get more help and socialization on the mainland. The community tends to be very friendly and helpful, so don't hesitate to ask questions. :)

A tip about chat: set the channel to User by clicking on the last tab on the chat box, so you can monitor all channels.

Don't spend your craft SP (Skill Points) on stats and such, just quality and crafting plans, those points are scarce and precious!

Wear heavy armor when fighting melee, medium or heavy when fighting ranged, and light for magic, foraging, and crafting.

Finally, welcome to Ryzom, I hope you enjoy your time here. :)

A bit complicated for the new player, but...

Requirements for medium armor are constitution times 1.5 AND highest lvl +25, whichever yields the lower value.

i.e. con 100 and highest lvl of 120-
con x 1.5 = 150, lvl + 25 = 145
You can wear up to a Q145 medium armor piece, as that is the lower value

And not ALL weapons are Strength +10, technically
Ranged weapons go on your Balance +10, but that's minor as they're not a very common weapon ;)

Actually, you shouldn't put armors into categories like that. Which rmor to wear depends on your levels, your team, and your enemy. Personally I never wear Heavy Armor, Since my melee is 150 and my dodge is 250. Thus I benefit more from a set of Medium armor q230 with +1 Dodge, than I do from a q170 set of Heavy with, let's say, +2 parry. I dodge more and use up less stamina in exchange for less hitpoints and taking harder hits (IF I get hit). When fighting psykopla or stinga, I even only wear light. They only have spells anyway!

Likewise, if you're going to be a tanking mage, you may want to opt for Medium armor, for the much higher protection, and take the small penalty (which is peanuts at lower lvls).

Basically, choose your gear depending on your playstyle and role, you'll perform much better. Welcome to Atys!

Leave the begginers area and come to the main land as soon as you know how to move your character and are able to kill a Yubo!
