RP for newcomers

Post by mercury7 »

After playing the game for nearly a year, I'd like to give the RP a go

any advice as to where to start?

Well, as I'm quite interested in RP myself, and like you, an RP noob, perhaps we should meet up sometime for a bath and a chat? Give me a shout in-game sometime (Nillian) and we can hook something up :) Can only learn by practice, right?

If they ever give an RP channel, you might have just what you need. There are some good RP folks and guilds out there but after a year I think you might want a venue more than anything else.

quick intro :

ban the game mechanics vocabulary when you speak or tell things (hp, tp, mob, xp and other abbreviate), and here you go, you actually "rp".
" omg what a big mob!" convert to " woah! what a big kitin! "

emphase discussion including feelings and professionnalism : you're a mercenary, be concerned about dappers :) . a warrior ? about how long to kill it. a forager ? random lil chat :p
avoid rl issue and game mechanics related chat ("pull teh jug"), and you'll immediatly create a rp mood.

if you want to say something outta rp, like " jug spawn is down ", use bracket : " Hey, where are the preys ? (jug spawn down ?) "

old-school RP ban also the smileys, and use the * * to indicate emote, but i think it's too old, spare smileys help to understand quickly the tone of a sentence :
" that's silly :-) " or " that's silly *smile* "
" that's silly :-( " or " that's silly *pout* "

maybe you are concerned about the insane RP-speaking, fanatics and phantasmagoria-like speech ? (" *in a dull evening covered by strange haze, the proud warrior come in, looks around, breathe deeply, and say * Hello! ")
naah -- no need. SoR is more a cyberpunk rpg, so modern/causal speaking fits well.

A RP chat channel is a bit funky, tbh. It's like a soap-opera radio broadcast, useful to read when alone and bored (lol). I'm not that confident if it will works well in SoR since we have (now) separate faction.

and a personal aside: i've always disliked people who use bracket-talk in order to roleplay. for me it''s been quite jarring and more like "hey i'm RPing!!!1". if something can be masked in appropiate words like your spawn example (would've used "seems like we drove them all off" personally ;) ) by all means do so, but in my opinion there's no need to hesitate using certain things that actually do fit into the world, like item QL.

If you're after a bit of gentle RP, I suggest giving our Pub Nights a go. Its mostly chatting IC and is very relaxed. Next one is Nov 29th at 8.30pm at the Thesos bar. (Its then every 2 weeks after that)

This is a nice discussion. First off - I think there is no better rp-channel than /around. It's natural and inviting for others.

When I played fantasybased games I usually went for an "archaic" language, atleast tried to avoid modern words. In a Science Fantasy setting we would be much more free. I don't use shortened words because it's harder for the reader. Words like QL, mob, mat, TP, etc are so established on Atys, I would use them. But hp and xp belongs to game mechanics.

Marking OOC is a good behavior, like Pr0ger suggests, it's so easy to mix it up otherwise. We are not our characters (I hope), especially now when many of our characters are turning into religious-fanatics and racisists.

I have no problems with smileys, just finds them a bit clumsy.

I dislike the mindreading-emotes (that Nevrax seem to like, the emotes are really full of them): *Ulani thinks of Vanilla Icecream*
Better to use: *Ulani licks her lips with a dreamy expression on her face*

The deadliest of sins in RP (I think) is "godmoding": *Ulani swings her sword and cuts off Kostika's head*
Better to use: *Ulani swings her blade towards Kostika's throat*
Because Kostika can then: *Kostika ducks and draws her blade*
RP your own character's actions only.

(Sorry for this, Kostika. Here's your head back.)
I'll check out your pub night some day, it sounds fun.

EDIT: It's really about immersion and "living in Atys", so there are no rules or correct RP-style. The rules are made up by the people involved. In a MMO you can't expect to get a IC response from everyone you meet.

I agree about godmoding emotes. (Thanks for my head. I need that) Its not usually a problem I've seen except for when playing around.

Alot of people RP without realising they're doing it. Its as simple as talking and being your character. It doesn't have to be over the top. It can be simple. Sometimes I find the simplest of conversations to be some of the best RP.

There is no right way to RP. Just the way that feels right.

I hope to seeyou at the next Pub Night. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I have a question about what sort of language to use. I occasionally hear people refering to others as m'lord and m'lady, and this just seems wrong to me. We may run around with swords, but Atys just doesn't have a mideval fantasy feel to me. It feels much more like sci-fi. When I RP I just use standard modern english, mixed with atys slang. How about others?
