Deposit Tracking -- am I doing it wrong?

So I bought the 50' deposit tracking skill so I would know where to prospect. But when I use it just outside of my Matis starting town on noob island, I inevitably get the return "resource within 1 meter." I've tried running around to different places, but always seem to get that result. Sometimes following up with a prospect yields a resource, sometimes not -- but I've never gotten a "10 meters to North" type result. Am I doing something wrong, or is noob island just chock full o' resources?

Yes, noob island is full outside of the town, but if you go farther out, then you'll get more use from your tracker. It's not a bad thing that you don't need it in noob land, it takes up focus to use, and time to run around. Remember, when you prospect the res has to be right in front of you, or it won't be found. That's why they have the 20 degree angle stanza, and the five meter stanza and so on. It can be 1 meter behind you, and you won't find it. You also have to have a prospecting level set high enough to find the res that the tracker tells you is there.
