Are you still on the starter isle? The starter isle is pretty empty, you'll find more people on the mainland.

There's also a lot of people over in the new PvP area.
Best way to get better equipment is join a guild. They can help you to level, hunt with you and help you get better equipment.

Its daytime Europe (Work/school etc) and very early morning in the US so this isn't a time when a lot of people are on.
Also Episode 2 tends to suck people out of the lands and into other areas.
All of these could be contributing.

Yep, starter Island is a bit quiet.
You can always leave and come to the mainland where there are lots of people. Go to the teleport and confirm that you want to leave the Islands.
