Odd, annoying crashes

Post by rob01 »

I rebuilt my PC yesterday afternoon. It's had it's current setup for the best part of 2 years so i thought i'd do a clean sweep and get rid of all the guff that was left on there by the dozens of apps/games I've installed and removed over that time.

It's an athlon xp2600+ on an asus a7v8x-x series mobo with 1GB RAM(2700). Vid Card is a GeForce6600XT(128) and I'm running XP SP2.

I logged back on yesterday after the rebuild and reinstall, said hi to my guildies and told them I was going to try and crash my game to see if the rebuild had fixed anything. I managed to cause a total system lockup in less than a minute. I went to the tool merch...opened the trade window and walked backwards while the window was populating.

This seems to be the most common time that I suffer crashes...in trade windows.

Has anyone seen this happen before? If so, how did you get it fixed?

As an interesting side-note, it didn't seem to happen in the patch before they rolled out a patch (88) i think..a few thursdays ago.

If no-one has any idea about this does anyone know of any software that might be available that might get me a log of all my hardware at the point of crash so i can narrow down what the problem is.

If anyone can help with this..I'll give them a million dapper if they like.

Multiple things can cause crashes with Ryzom as it is a very demanding software application. Some things to check:

- RAM timings: a number of players have found that their RAM sticks are mismatched or are marginal when run at full bus speed. RAM speeds and timings can be set via the BIOS for your system. If you have different brands of RAM then the chance for timing problems increases.

- Video drivers: the latest are not always the greatest for all cards. I crashed with the latest ATI Radeon Catalyst drivers on my 9800 XT. Switching back to an earlier version remedied that. Also try forcing Direct3D mode in the 'Ryzom configuration' button on the launcher. That also has helped a number of players.

- Audio: this is more rare but can still happen. Disable EAX and lower the number of tracks for sound. Again this is reachable via the configuration button.

There are a couple of log files in the Ryzom folder. Delete client.log and log.log and start the game. If you crash again then send those log files to support-ee@ryzom.com and we will have a look.

RAM timing, hehehe. I had to manually disable hyperthreading in the BIOS, as the sticks were the same speeds (2700 iirc) but a different brand and the hyperthreading turned auto on. Only SoR managed to load them bad enough to cause a prob, so turned it off. Really stable now.

About drivers, there are some threads here talking about the 72.14 Nvidia drivers being the best so far.

I think your best chance is vid drivers indeed, walking backwards will cause a lot of poly's that will have to be drawn, and the window is translucent already. *dangerdanger*

the a7_8x__ series (i have a7n8x) give lots of problems when ram is set to different speed than cpu.. i had to underclock my 200MHz ram to 133MHz to make it work correctly :D

I thought I'd post a closing response to this as I find it really annoying when threads die without being resolved.

The problem was the via chipset drivers for the kt400 chipset on the card.

So. It turns out that i didn't need to buy two different gfx cards and totally replace my ram with silly overpriced stuff.

At least now i should be able to get back in the game without getting crashed every 30 -60 mins.
