Why a weapon with higher dmg actually does less dmg?

Post by doustin »

I have a 2h axe and a 2h sword. I am lvl 44, the 2h axe has 20 lvl and the 2h sword has lvl 40. I deal more dmg with the lvl 20 axe than with the 40 lvl sword. Why?

The level of the weapon may dictate it's max capability to inflict damage, but the materials used to make the weapon may or may not be good enough to reach that level.

Basically it seems your axe was made with better quality materials than the sword. There will be typically 2 numbers to watch for damage "your damage and (max damage)", it will apear similar to this : 40 (56). In this example you can currently do 40 damage, but the weapon is capable of inflicting 56 damage... when you get to higher levels, you will be able to do 56 with this weapon. You will never be able to exceed 56 damage with this weapon regardless of your level... this is why you shop for your next weapon before you need it :P

When buying a weapon always look at the stats, not just at the level. I think Damage and Hit/min are the most important stats to look at for a weapon ;)

2h Axes got a 20% boost to max damage stats (compared to 2h swords of the same lvl) after a recent patch. But this was balanced by a reduction in speed.

My 20 lvl axe : 99 dmg max

My 40 lvl sword : 108 dmg max

I deal more dmg with the axe, why? ( i mean dmg in every hit ) Its cause the last patch have not updated the values of dmg and hit/minute in axes?

What is your melee skill? At lower levels you really have to match your skill to the level of the equipment. I am level 38 in 2h melee and I find that I will do way more damage with a level 30 sword than a level 50. Plus it helps that the level 30 sword is a 'sword of damage' as it was made of the right type of mats.

I take it from your post that you are lvl 44, so the branches have not split. What you state is a bit wierd, so please:

- can you check the damage when you wield the weapon? not the max damage, but the damge you inflict: if you right click and select info on the weapon you'll get both values.

- can you also detail your actions? are you using the "increase damage" with one weapon and not the other?

- are you attacking the same mob? different mobs have different resists.. althought not in your case because both are slashing weapons...

From your info, on a basic hit the sword should do more damage than the axe. Im guessing that you are using increased damage actions. There is an "optimal" for-weapon-up-to lvl for those. Make sure you are using an action appropriate to the lvl of the weapon.

A guess - but a likely culprit is probably the increased damage brick your using is not high enough for the sword.

You state -

My 20 lvl axe : 99 dmg max
My 40 lvl sword : 108 dmg max

Increase damage 4 is up to lvl 45 so I doubt your using that.

The most likely culprit is your using increase damage 2 (up to lvl 20) that you set up for your axe. Therefore your getting

99*2 = 198 max damage with the axe

and since its to low for your sword your getting something around.

108 + (108*.50[approximate value for defficiency in incr damage]) = 162

If you used the correct increase damage 4 then you would get 108*2 = 216.
