I'm just starting my first character tonight and I've read some Beginner Guides so I don't feel too clueless. However, the guides addressing the whole issue of stanzas, bricks and the modular action system are plain confusing. Are they basically an extended macro that chains together successive actions/spells? Should you use them from Level 1 or is there a recommended starting range? Are they used in the same way for magic and fighting as they are in harvesting and crafting? Please let me know if you have found a website or forum post that helped you gain a better understanding of this.
Thanks!
Can someone please explain Stanzas, Bricks and Modular Actions in plain English?

Every action you perform is made up of "stanzas". A stanza is just a building block used to make an action.bukowski wrote:I'm just starting my first character tonight and I've read some Beginner Guides so I don't feel too clueless. For example, if you look at the "Increase Damage 1" action, it's made up of the following 3 stanzas:
-Default Attack Fight Stanza
-Increase Damage 1
-Consume 3 Stamina
NOTE: you can see this by opening your action progression window ('a' key) and right-clicking on the Increase Damage 1 skill and choosing "Info".
These are the building blocks for that action. They control what the action does. The Default Attack Fight Stanza makes that action into a fight type of action (vs. magic, craft, or harvest actions). The Increase Damage 1 stanza means that when you use that action, the damage of your weapon is increased. Finally, the Consume 3 Stamina stanza means that when you use this action, 3 of your stamina points are lost.
When you train in an action, you gain access to all of the stanzas that make up that action. You can then create custom actions using any of the stanzas you have access to.
When you create custom actions, you have to balance the "cost" stanzas with the "credit" stanzas. The cost stanzas are the things that add benefits to the action (increased damage, accurate attack, acid damage, etc.). The credit stanzas are how you pay for the cost of the spell. They're things like sap usage, hit point usage, increased casting time, decreased range, etc.
So let's say you want to create a new acid spell. You would first choose the type of action you're creating (celestial missile, in this case). You would then add the "Acid Damage X" stanza so that the spell does some acid damage (X being the particular level of acid you want to use). Next you need to add credit stanzas to pay for the cost of the acid spell. You can add things like a range credit which reduces the range of the spell, a casting time credit which increases its casting time, or a sap usage credit which uses some of your sap.
You can mix and match the credits to pay for the actions in different ways. For example, you could have an acid spell that was very short range (big range credit stanza) but used very little sap. Alternately, you could have a different spell that had a long range (small range credit stanza) but used a lot of sap.

Re: Can someone please explain Stanzas, Bricks and Modular Actions in plain English?
a stanza.. means something like a sub-component of an action
I think it originally meant a verse of a poem or song.
an action can be a spell, or an attack, or making a piece of armour etc, or searching for harvestable materials in the wilderness, or digging those up..
'bricks' are what skills/knowledge/techniques you make your stanzas out of. They generally have a range of power and costs based on level.
most of the low level actions are simple, and you just dont know enough to be able to fiddle with them, so lowbies can function quite well using the off-the-shelf actions.
so the 'default attack' action consists of a single stanza, which is made of the 'attack' brick.
As you advance, you gain access to bricks which can increase accuracy, damage, aim at different locations, cause special effects etc etc. these included in the action as extra stanzas, with some bricks being mutually exclusive. More powerful actions have a cost, and the way you cover that is using 'credit' stanzas.
I think the example given was an offensive spell.. by changing the credit/cost from sap to range.. you get a point blank range but free-to-cast spell.
Once you start playing with it, the system does make sense, even if I dont..

Modular Action System - The system Ryzom allows you to create Stanzas by editing the bricks that combine to make a Stanza.
Stanza - A combination of Bricks that are combined to make an "action" be it a combat action, crafting action, harvesting action or magic action.
Example - A mele attack is a stanza, A healing spell is a stanza, a prospecting action is a stanza, a crafting action is a stanza.
Bricks - The smallest components of Actions in the game that when put together make doing things possible in the game (magic, harvesting, crafting, mele).
Example- a range credit is a brick, an extraction counter is a brick, a HP credit is a brick, etc...
Now when you look at your action bar there are pre-made "stanzas" (i.e. actions) and then blank spots to create new ones when you start off. To customize how you do things in Ryzom you can edit or create new stanzas (actions). Right click on existing one to "edit" or right click on an empty spot to create "new action"
If creating a new stanza (action) you must first select the type of stanza you want.
1.) Default Attack Fight Stanza - All mele stanzas start with this one.
2.) Atysian Missile Spell Blueprint - All single elemental "nukes" start with this one.
3.) Atysian Drain Spell Blueprint - All single Damage Over Time elemental spells start with this one.
4.) Atysian Affliction Spell Blueprint - All Offensive Afflictions start with this one.
5.) Celestial Missile Spell Blueprint - All single heal spells start with this one
6.) Celestial Affliction Spell Blueprint - all Defensive Afflictions start with this one.
7.) Primal Magic Spell Blue Print - All Sap Crystal Making actions start with this one.
8.) Atysian Double Missile Spell Plan - All DOUBLE elemental "nukes" start with this one.
9.) Atysian Drain Missile - All Spells that Combine a normal elemental attack "nuke" with one Damage Over Time elemental spell start with this.
10.) Atysian Afflicting Missile - All spells that combine a elemental attack "nuke" with an Offensive Affliction start with this.
11.) Celestial Double Missile Spell Plan - All heals that combine two different or same heal spells start with this.
12.) Crafting - There will be numerous crafting templates for the various crafting trees if you've trained in those and these will be various colors if you have different race crafting plans.
13.) Power Stanza - all Power stanzas start with this one
· taunt,
· shielding,
· speeding up,
· invulnerability,
· berserk,
· balance hp,
· restore life,
· restore stamina,
· restore sap,
· restore focus.
14.) Aura Stanza - All auras start with this one
· life aura,
· stamina aura,
· sap aura,
· protection stanza (mele aura),
· umbrella stanza (range aura),
· anti-magic shield,
· war cry.
15.) Extraction Stanza - All extraction stanzas start with this one.
16.) Care Plan - All caring stanzas start with this one.
17.) Prospecting Plan - All Prospecting for sources and tracking stanzas start with this one.
Now with that out of the way it gets easier. The key to remember is that basically creating Stanzas/Actions always costs you something. You must be able to at least pay the cost or Over Pay (well get to that later).
When ever you add an option with the Add Option button or change your option to a higher level option you will see the left side of the total (yellow numbers near the bottom half of the Create New Action window) have a number. That is the cost of what you want to do.
Youll notice a button near the top of the Create New Action window called Add Credit. For the Stanza Action to be allowed the Credit must equal or exceed the Cost (the left yellow number). Thus the Green right number must be >= to the left yellow number. If you do not have enough credit the bottom of the window will have a cast impossible and you can not learn the action.
There are several reasons to mix and match what you are willing to use to pay for the Action with. For example a high level mele with lots of HP and little sap may want to start paying for his magic actions with HP credits as soon as he can get them or upgrade them.
You may want over pay to increase your success rate to a reasonable percent and get the difficulty bonus in the bottom of the window. If you balance the left and right then you will get a match . The success and other stanza information will be found towards the bottom of the create new action window. When you have added enough credit to match or get over credit the learn the action button at bottom will become available to finish and save and use your customized stanza.

Your best bet is to team up with people and ask them what they use, while playing with your stanzas while fighting monsters.
You'll figure it out as you level, ryzom is a learning experience and as you have an open system there is no fear of losing something by making a few mistakes.
I say stop reading guides, just play and explore and enjoy...

Don't worry about them too much at first, you dont need to know anything about them until you've lvl'ed up a bit.bukowski wrote:I'm just starting my first character tonight and I've read some Beginner Guides so I don't feel too clueless. When you do come to try and edit your actions, the main thing to realise is that you must have enough "credit" on your action to cover the cost of the action. It won't let you "learn" the action unless this is the case.
Other than that, just have a go and experiment a bit by editing your actions. It's the easiest way to understand the basics, and then you can ask more questions to people ingame, or on this forum.
Good luck
