For some reason magic (offensive elemental) has always seemed difficult to me. I level slower in it, and I'm more likely to die when using it to defend myself. Maybe I just haven't focused on it enough.
I have a Matis character which I started with all three magic starter packs. Having no melee ability at all is the only way I can focus on magic LOL. Anyway, does anyone have any tips? The character is currently just above level 20, if I remember correctly. Possibly 26. I have heard that ele is more powerful than melee and I'm curious to find out for myself if that's true.

Re: Magic seems difficult
Elemental really becomes powerful at L100 when you get the double missile spell. That lets you combine two of your elemental spells into one, thus doubling your damage output.katriell wrote:For some reason magic (offensive elemental) has always seemed difficult to me. Re: Magic seems difficult
Magic is hard at first. When you reach level 125, your magic will do insane amounts of damage and will leave melee in the dust mostly. I would recommend leveling up magic with a group from the start - at high levels everyone has to group, but melees can solo much more easily than mages at low levels.

Re: Magic seems difficult
Elemental is a lot more powerfull than melee from level 125 up, but below level 100 it's a lot less powerfull. I agree with the others - it's best to join a group, or to find a healer and blast plants (using rot damage). If you still want to solo, here's a few pointers to soloing elemental magic:
Important thing when using elemental is that you kill the creature before it reaches you. You're wearing light armor, you can't dodge while casting, and getting hit will often break your incantation. All of that together makes it rather suicidal to keep casting on a creature once it's within melee range. Make sure to be at maximum range (50 meter) when you throw your first spell, and set up your spells to do damage as fast as possible. So don't use range or time credits, use health credits instead if necesary. Also, it's going to happen a lot that you'll get a chain of unlucky resists. To prevent this from meaning certain death, always hunt near a safe location. Towns and tribe camps work for this purpose, but the best is to fight near water. So try to catch a trek to Tryker or Fyros lands when you can (yes, the desert 50-100 zone has quite a lot of water).
Below level 50, elemental and offensive affliction are still in one skill, which means you can use root without loosing elemental experience. If succesfull the creature stays rooted long enough for you to cast three elemental spells at it, after which you can root a second time. Something else which helps at times is to enchant your amplifier with a damage spell so you can do a little extra damage at the last moment if necesary.
But actually, the best advice I can give is not to use these tips at all. Just find a team instead

Re: Magic seems difficult
Elemental should be still fairly easy to solo at lvl 26. Try to get hold of good amp, choice or excellent, with good magic power and speed. Also, look for modest jewelry and light armor with hp and maybe some sap boost. You do not need q250 items but something close to q100 will help a lot.
Get hold of hp and range credits and mix yourself a long and short range damage spells. Get some self heal (100-200) to speed up hp regeneration as it won't get full very fast because of boosts. Idea is to have hp and sap reserves expended about same time.
Find good spood where you can kill whole spawn of relatively slow moving and low hp mobs without moving much. Start casting about max range and switch to short range spell when mob gets closer. Mob should be able to hit you 0-1 times mostly. When you get hang of it, you can switct to new target before first one is dead...
A while ago I was playing with a low level tryker elementalist and I found izams or whatever birds there are near kami tp, vigourous goaris and after those growling cloppers very good and fast grind.
Matis low lvl region does not have similar slow moving carnivores. Bigger yobos and small raguses are probably good. There is also low lvl plants that might be nice.
EDIT: You can also ask homins in Abyss Eye guild for teaming. There should be quite lot of them around Matis low lvl areas. Teaming is much better than soloing in long term.

Re: Magic seems difficult
another trick is to use 'fear' alternating with your nukes.
possibly even in place of taunt, as it doesnt seem to trigger social mobs mutual defense instincts, and as long as you avoid using range credits, has twice the range of taunt.
the idea is to get your target running away from you instead of at you
so dont use range credits on your nukes either..
You may have to break the link yourself if its being too successful..
You will be splitting xp between offensive and defensive, which is wasteful below level 50 and very desirable above
Gingos, and a range of other beasts (ocyx..) are immune to fear..
bad idea trying to solo carnivores at low level - especially using magic
try to avoid using time credits - except maybe on your 'opening shot'
