Newbie questions :)

Post by nosyd »

Hi Folks,

I just started playing this game last night and so far I think it's great. I'm only level 12 and only a couple of hours into it. I just have a few questions.

1. Is there any way of getting the player char further away from screen? I use the mouse wheel but it still feels to close to the screen.
2. I might have a bug but there doesn't seem to be much music playing, is that right?
3. I'm at level 12 and I have bought another daggar along with some light boots, gloves and vest. So I now have 2 weapons in my hands. Is this recomended or should I look for a sword? Would you wait until I get to the mainland to buy more weapons and armour?
4. Is it wise to concentrate on one skill first and then maybe go for another later on? I was thinking of doing Fighting first and foraging. Then after a while dabbling in magic.
5. It's very quiet on the newbie isle. Is it instanced or just very quiet?
6. Is there just the one server for English speaking players (Euro). I never got to chose a server?

As you can see, I'm very much a noob to this game. The manual didn't seem to answer any of my questions to well.

But I'm loving it at the moment. The graphics look great. I have a very high end machine and can have all the settings set to the highest with no fps drop or lag. Does the mainland behave the same?

Cheers

1. mouse wheel is as far as it goes ;)
2. Dunno- ill leave that one for someone else :)
3. really down to personal preference, if you have 2 daggers you will get close conbat xp, a dagger and a sword and your xp gets split into 1h melee and close combat
4. Again personal preference and nobody can argue the correct way to levels
5. Noob isle is very quiet, if you want more people and more fun leave it when you feel ready to :)
6. yep 1 server for english speakers

to edit forum profile look at the bottom of this page and select user control panel from the drop down list

1) There is no official way to move further away.
2) No bug, there is wind, birds, sound of water and one song per capital city. But there is a build in MP3 Player :)
3) Do what you like. The skillsystem is *very* open. If you get bored with the daggers try any weapon you like.
4) Same here. Do what you like. Well, me personally suggest at least to have some healing skills. But that depends on your own will
5) starter island is instanced. You can leave anytime. I suggest to wait for lvl 20 in melee and lvl 20-40 in foraging. Again its your choice without regrets :)
6) yes, one for english, one for french one for german. It depends on the community you selected when crating an account online. If you want to change to the french or german sevrer you can do it within the first 7 days.

welcome and have fun :)

Edit: Some of the cities might cause a little lag in highest settings. not sure how it is when you have a very highend machine. i play on 2 GHz and a medium gxf card.

Welcome to Ryzom!
nosyd wrote: 1. Is there any way of getting the player char further away from screen? I use the mouse wheel but it still feels to close to the screen.
As far as I know, without mucking with the configuration files of the client, which invalidates your support contract, the zoom you get with the mouse wheel is all there is.
nosyd wrote: 2. I might have a bug but there doesn't seem to be much music playing, is that right?
There's not a lot of music in Ryzom. In fact, when it first launched, there was none at all. They added music for the different cities that will play when you first arrive in the city and repeat ever so often. They did mention adding more in the future.
nosyd wrote: 3. I'm at level 12 and I have bought another daggar along with some light boots, gloves and vest. So I now have 2 weapons in my hands. Is this recomended or should I look for a sword? Would you wait until I get to the mainland to buy more weapons and armour?
The damage you can do is directly related to the weapon you have equipped. Most people tend to use a 2 handed weapon as they have the highest damage output. Daggers have low damage output but a high swing rate. They can be useful in certain situations (better for interrupting due to high swing rate, etc.) but for your day-to-day hunting, I'd suggest getting a 2 handed weapon or, if you want to dual wield, get a sword and do sword and dagger.

As far as waiting for the mainland, I guess it depends on what's available on the island. If you can find a "Choice Sword of Damage" you might want to pick that up as it'll speed up your leveling on the island quite a bit.
nosyd wrote: 4. Is it wise to concentrate on one skill first and then maybe go for another later on? I was thinking of doing Fighting first and foraging. Then after a while dabbling in magic.
This is entirely up to you and what you want to accomplish. If your goal is to quickly get to L250, the focusing on one skill will likely be quickest. I personally like to mix it up and level all four trees together. Ryzom is very open in that way. You can shift what skills your working on at any time and there's no penalty or limit on what skills you can work on.
nosyd wrote: 5. It's very quiet on the newbie isle. Is it instanced or just very quiet?
The newbie island is only for brand new characters of the race you chose. Most people come over after about L20-30, which you can get pretty quick. Ryzom does have a smaller playerbase than the big mainstream games but once you get to the mainland and start meeting people (join a guild), it shouldn't be too hard to find people to play with.
nosyd wrote: 6. Is there just the one server for English speaking players (Euro). I never got to chose a server?
Yes, a couple months back, they merged the North American and European English servers.
nosyd wrote: As you can see, I'm very much a noob to this game. The manual didn't seem to answer any of my questions to well.
Yeah, the manual isn't worth much. However, I find this is pretty much the case for most online games as the game itself is dynamic and changes over time.

The cities do give people some problems. However, if you're on a high-end machine, you should be ok. I'm on an above average machine (I won't call it "high-end" anymore) and run at 1600X1200 with fairly high settings on everything and run very smoothly through town.

At the bottom of the forum, there's a pull-down labeled "Forum Jump". In that, select "User Control Panel". It's at the top of the list. There you'll have the options to set up your forum account.

First of, welcome to Atys and the forums. It's good to see that you've taken an interest in this game, and I hope you'll end up staying :)

As for the questions, Ali did a good job answering them, but I'll write a few comments of my own as well ;)
nosyd wrote: 2. I might have a bug but there doesn't seem to be much music playing, is that right?
If you are thinking of background music, there just simply is none. You have the occassional tune when entering cities, but that's it at the moment. Bjorn Arve Lagim is the composer of the existing tracks, and I know he's made some others that hopefully will be implemented soon.

NPC items are low ql, so if I were you, I'd save up some dappers to spend on the mainland. Player made items are of much higher quality, but are a bit more expensive. As for the weapons, I'd recommend you to buy a good player made sword at the merchants, and some heavy armor. It might set you back a few dappers, but you'll find that killing mobs becomes more effective and safe.

Very quiet.

LOL Ali. He is lvl 12 and the skill tree splits at lvl 50 for 1h, 2h and close combat. I hope he gets a new weapon by lvl 50 :)

But only after level 50 when it splits.

As Micrix said, no OFFICIAL way. There is a way to edit your config to increase zoom but that is NOT recommended and we could not POSSIBLY advocate you doing that. :)

I belive if you do you break the CoC or some other such legally binding agreement.

Wow !

Thanks a lot guys, so many replys in such a quick time. That's great.

I do plan on staying here for some time if it all works out fine. I'm a SWG Vet and have been looking and researching for a new MMO home for myself. I chose this one because it seemed to have everything I was looking for. I like the idea of a small company producing such a game and the player base seem's just the right size for me. I've had enough of the 'BIG CHEESE 'companys for the moment. SWG was just getting to much and the Customer Service was a complete joke.

My name in-game is (Tryker) Aain, so please look out for me in-game and feel free to chat if you see me.

You will no doubt be seeing a lot more of me on here, with all my great nooby questions.

Thanks for all the advice
