First of all, this is meant as a positive critic, not as flamebait. Ryzom is a game that does a couple of things exceptionally right, so I suppose it deserves a statement - for my peace of mind, at least.
Okay, the crafting system is amazing. I love it, and I wish that every other game out there would take a long, long look at how it could be done. It's interesting and actually fun to craft, due to the tons of optimization abilities. This is the best crafting system I have seen in a computer game so far.
Harvesting is... a very interesting change. I do not quite grab why harvesting gets more difficult/dangerous with the same skills when I grow up with levels, but I'm sure there's some reason for this. I like the fact that a professional harvester actually has to learn (in the sense of understanding the process) harvesting.
Creating your own skills and spells looks fun for the first few times... but unfortunately, at least at my low levels, there seems to be only one sensible combination with any given skill set, with minor modifications whether I want to do my super blow after a dodge, a crit or a parry.
I positivel love the inclusion of a mp3-player into the GUI, and I used it religiously.
Oh, and the staff and nonstaff support in the game is fantastic and helpful, and treats me as a perfect mixture of gamer and customer. Thank you for answering quite a few questions.
However... the mechanics seem solid, but still the Game doesn't click with me. It feels very much like a MUD or MUSH... you have a huge environment, interesting skillsystem and mechanics, but... it feels very hollow. The beginner's isle looks pretty, but the looks are very repetitive, and the fact that the settlements look and feel exactly the same isn't helping much.
After leaving the isle, a new and confused player is thrown into some giant city or other (I had a look at every race)... which feels empty. Sure, there's tons of NPCs running around... but they don't do anything.
I probably missed a lot of stuff, but after the initial excitement of testing out a new skill or spell in combat, combat becomes... "meh". Click, click, you die or him. It's nothing original, and feels strangely uninspired, compared to the rest.
Maybe it's the alien world that turns me off, though I don't think so. A classic world filled with elves and dwarves *might* have captured my interest more than the struggle between Kami and Karawan, but I don't think so.
So... I am sorry. Ryzom has tons of good ideas, and I will recommend testing the game to anyone I know, because of said good ideas, and the crafting system. However, I just don't feel at home in this world.
No hard feelings, and I wish you the best of times.

This was a very mature critic, and you grabbed quite well the ups and downs of this game. Too bad it's not for you...

There's defintely a lot of thing the game can improve on.

Nice post. I think you are right about that hollow thing, there has been quite many threads about same issue. Maybe, you should try again when you have fed up with classical dwarf/elf/orc setup. There is probably much more quest/instances/outposts and other content to make Atys more buzzling place by then

Nice post, so rare to see from new people.
One thought though, before you leave, give the roleplay event in Pyr tonight a go.
They are usually fun to do, and hopefully it will give you some more happy memories of SoR.
