Dodge vs Parry

Post by frostbit »

I *FINALLY* understand! All through open Beta and into release I was convinced that Parry was broken. I had never parried a single time... ever. Finally today I learn why: The Parry/Dodge button! *boggle*

Ok, lets move on though. Obviously, you are not intended to both Parry *and* Dodge, and I can live with that, but what then is the difference? Intuitively, I would guess you would want to "dodge" as a lightly armored warrior and "parry" as a heavy armored character. Is this correct? Does the "Action Penalty" from armor and weapons affect parry or dodge? Both? Is this just a "style" issue?

And advice / recommendations?

Thanks

I was told that you parry more than you dodge when wearing heavy armor but I have yet to test that.

All I know is that when you fight nekkid on newbie island you parry about the same amount as you dodge.

No no no, though i haven't tested out the dodge parry pen by the type of amor that all well might be true. However, as a crafter, with the right mat's combos and later on much much later on in your crafting life. you can put mat's together that all have a very high parry or dodge modifier. Thus when you make an item with these such mats, and i'm sure hwne you have looked at your equipment you ahve noticed the parry mod and dodge mod stat's prob both at 0 especially early on. These mats can give bonuses to your say parry or dodge on the item created. So makeing a full set of + to dodge you'd then have dodge set, and such. For the early ages though try out the prev mentioned with heavy try parry see if it works more n such. i hope this helps.....

Perhaps the cause of the confusion is that the parry/dodge toggle works the opposite of the other toggles. If the button says Move, you're standing still. If the button says Sit, you're standing. If the button says Walk Mode, you're normal mode of locomotion is running. If the buton says Parry Mode, you will parry not dodge.

With the other buttons, clicking the button will change to the label on the button. With Dodge/Parry mode you change from the label on the button.

With the other toggles you get immediate feedback (you sit, move, walk) but with parry/dodge you have to melee a few critters. I don't know if changing the labels at this stage would cause more or less confusion in the long run, but it isn't consistant with the other buttons.

So far I have no idea if using barehand, 1-H, 2-H or shields has any meaning for dodge/parry.

Any *confirmed* information on that?

Jackie Chan thinks probably different and could prove it to anyone of us I guess ;)

And still hoping for some hints on my question :)

This same question has bothered me as well. The combat section of the manual says nothing about either. I just figured that dodge would be used when facing an NPC that was unarmed, like many of the creatures on the training islands. As for parry I thought it was used for combat with another weapon-wielding NPC.

Since they are two seperate moves, one completely evading and another negating an attack, it a shame you cannot use both.

While reading this thread though it seems that the light-dodge and heavy-parry idea makes complete sense.

Right, but making complete sense and this game rarely go hand in hand. Regardless, it would be great if someone in the know could answer the question. I currently have only light armor with no modifiers to parry or dodge and I seem to perform each action equally well. Maybe tonight I will kick down for a full suit of heavy and re-examine.

Fortunately the investment for the Attack after Dodge / Attack after Parry skills is not very substantial. If we find out later that heavy armor wearers should lean towards parry it is not that big a hit to train up that line.
