Time differences *suggestion*

Post by caitiff »

ok, This whole time difference thing is getting confusing :P I see different time zones posted and its just hard to tell when events and stuff are. My suggestion is as follows. Who ever is doing this forum do some coding. This code will have you enter in your control panel what time zone you are in (i believe this is already done) and then when you enter in a time in your post it will go off of that so that everyone sees the time as it is for them. This would just be a matter of taking the variable of the time zone the poster is in and +/- the variable of the person viewing the post. This would be SOO nice and not too hard.

Code it up and send them a copy and I bet they'll be more likely to consider it :p

One problem with me coding it is that I do not know there current code. Can't quite code something when I do not know what I would have to work with.

I believe that all knows the GMT so if the always posting the hours in gmt it will be easy for everyone to know what time everything will happen.

For example i'm in greece so i'm gmt+2
If they tell an event will be in 10GMT i know it will be at 12 greece hour.
The same goes for everyone else.
No need to make a code for time.
And everyone can see their hour (GMT+/-?) in their clock down there in the right status bar of windows.

Its really confusing to use WEST BST EST and all the other hours.
It took me 3 hours looking on web to see the differences in times and to learn what time is in my country.

Just use GMT and everything will be ok i think.

THe only problem with GMT is that we're mostly all in daylight savings right now. Thus you need to add +1 to your GMT modifier.

As I've said before, if people jsut post as UK time, then no one will have to do any complex maths other than the +/- of their GMT

I totally agree. GMT never changes. DST or whatever name it is called for other areas (BST for example) is different for different areas as to when and if it starts and ends. Some areas never have DST. Yes, this will require individuals to learn what their time is in comparison to GMT and to take into account DST if they have to deal with, but once they learn this association, all should work out. Using an unchanging "measuring stick" really seems to be the best way to go.

For example, the areas that are in the Eastern Time zone would use:
Eastern Standard Time (EST) = GMT-5

And those areas In the Eastern Time zome that have to deal with Daylight Savings TIme, just have to remember that when DST is in effect, they should use:
Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) = GMT-4

I know that I, for one, will post times in EST/EDT and GMT times so as to, hopefully, avoid confusion.

Time and Date (dot) com is a very handy thing too. It has a handy converter.

Main problem with this is that many of us are not in the UK and have no idea when UK daylight savings time starts and ends.

GMT is always GMT.

Adding an hour for UK players isnt such a big deal. Many players have to calculate confusing times regardless of daylight savings.
