I've seen alot of quite good reasons here for having something like an item mall and and very little against it. Usually only mockery and foot stamping. "If Ryzom had a shop i'd cry and cry and cry, then take my much valued custom elsewhere..humpf !!". Well ok, but this is all academic now because we DID have it your way, Ryzom DIDN'T change...and now?, well it's just about gone. I would have risked Ryzom changing a bit for the possibility of weekly events, level cap raises and loads more people to speak with.
I've loved this game and it's community, but hang me if you will, I have mostly played it to level up and become as good as I could get with my character. This is looked down upon by a few on these forums which have their own little competitions to see who has the lowest max level for the longest amount of playing time, which shows how l33t they are by not being l33t at all....
I don't now which games with things like item malls and f2p you have played but evidently they have been the wrong ones and you've had some rare bad experiences with them. I've been lucky, and in the last year of playing a couple of them i've encountered about 2 idiots of the kind you quote in this thread. 2 in a year is acceptable to me so i'll continue to play them. I've met way more people in these games that are like the ones in Ryzom than ones that are not.

The point is that Ryzom, with the real content development, as it was supposed to have, don't need f2p.
Of course, if we have a lack of content, no p2p nor f2p could save it.
The game mentioned before, ie, Last Chaos, altought it is a bad game for my taste, has much more features of Ryzom, but his value doesn't reach Ryzom in any way.
Both f2p and p2p are just different way to approach the market, but at the end what a game need is the 'content'.
As I said, I prefer a p2p game. Fair for every player. It's just a matter of concept, not about if it is better or worse.
Of course, if we have a lack of content, no p2p nor f2p could save it.

Ryzom for me dosn't need tons of new content, events every 2-3 weeks with kitin raids and cool stuff to be won would make me stay, i doubt any buyer of ryzom can convince me to stay and play, i will always pay for 2 accounts on ryzom so i can play if i want and to help get a bit of money in the game, but i am now skeptical of anyone making ryzom work, i have spoke with many companies who where looking to bid on ryzom and none seem convinsed it would work, mainly the amount of money needed to put into ryzom would take years to make back, and therefore a bad investment.

Garr I wish everyone would support the idea so the game can be saved. I don’t see how it is going to effect crafters since most don’t sell sup gear on vendor’s atm. So why say it’s the end of crafting when you know that’s not true. If your in a real guild you will always need crafters...... this is a great game that we all love please don’t let it die just because some thinks it’s a bad idea before trying it.
"IF" the game goes micro payments then comment after trying it.

Credit card fraud is not the responsibility of the game company. Most game companies use a third party company to do all their credit card transactions. It's the middle man's responsibility to verify to the credit card company's satisfaction that the transaction is not fraudulent. Security is not the game company's issue, nor do they take the loss when somebody successfully screws them. It's the same in real life. Whoever says that Ryzoms Charakters all look alike, or that it has no community at all, to quote a post faaaar above, has never realy played the game. And "Community" doesn´t mean Players on more or less active Servers btw.
It´s like this, us "old farts" would prefere tings to stay like they are. Yes, admitted.
But why? Well, many of us HAVE seen the dark side of other Games that are the "run of the Mill" out there and we didn´t like it a bit.
We love Ryzom for a Reason.
We love it BECAUSE it has almost none of the negative things many of us fled from.
We love it BECAUSE it´s different from these Games.
We love it because of the Dream inherited in it.
Most new Players sadly wouldn´t know about that dream and perhabs wouldn´t care abot it anyway.
Cash-Kids wouldn´t give a crap.
XP-Catalysers... Yeah, as you might see many of us old farts objected the idea from its very beginning.
And we all can see the results they brought.

Ok, so even IF it would not be Über-Loot to be sold by RL-Cash, I for myself would not want to play in a free to play Game, because those I´ve tried always came down to annoying the Hell out of me and turning of a Channel would cut me of from most of the community. And the chance to find the few good apples in the stack.
Mostly I think us oldies are not ranting against the Idea per say, but against the possibility of Hordes of flaming idiots swarming the Game like the Kitin were supposed to do all this time.
Ohwell, we could call that an Invasion and battle their forces to the death, but I don´t think that´d be a fight we could win
After thinking about it for a while, I personaly wouldn´t realy care if anyone bought his gear or got it on his own real accord, I mind the attitude behind the Charakter.
Most People that actually earn their stuff tend to be of a more "humble" nature and generally more pleasing to converse with, than someone who just whipped out his (or Moms) Credit Card and bought what he liked to "look cool."
Also, and I bet noone has thought of this before here.
Paying for stuff opens up another very real problem for a company owning a Game.
Credit Card fraud.
Ask whatever Game-Company you can and you´ll hear, if they deign to answer, that it´s a mayor problem and causing very real trouble.
From my experience with a Gameing Company I´m not allowed to name here:
Every Month Credit Card fraud alone causes about 300.000 to 400.000 Euros Damage.
Repercussions are still felt in certain Areas, as the problem stays on.
Ok, most Bigger Companys deal with it and know how to circumvent the heaviest repercussions, but still... If another smaler Company like former Nevrax, would take over Ryzom and make it f2p and use Item-Stores or something like it, it would be at a great risk and could very well bring it all crashing down in a short time.
Let´s hope not.
Anyway. I hope Ryzom survies in one or another way, I´d give it a chance then, but well... to many idiots and I´d be gone. *shrug*

You sound like you want people to get into financial trouble, or don´t care about it, if your Roommate will most certainly have very REAL trouble from his credit card Compnay for years to come. He´ll be one lucky Guild leader, if he can´t afford a PC anymore from all the depts he´s supposed to pay. If worst comes to worst. I sure hope you didn´t mean it this way.
Those are only a few not so bright candels and most people know how to responsibly use a CC, but well...
I realy hope for your Roomie that he wakes up soon.
As for my roommate, he's a big boy who can handle his own money. I never implied that he was bankrupt from his actions. I only said that he paid more in his game than he would've with a monthly subscription to WoW. In fact, he spent that money over several months, not that it is anybody else's concern. He pays his rent, and since I'm not his mother, that's where my interest ends.
There seems to be a disconnect with many of you and the general MMO population. You all keep asking the same questions, which seems to say to me that you have never ventured outside Ryzom.
People don't like P2P games because they feel like they are obligated to play to get their money's worth every month. This is especially irritating for people who have lots of responsibilities and little time to play. I know numerous people who do not play P2P MMOs for just this reason. However, if they are invested in a F2P game, they have no problem paying a little money to make their game life more enjoyable when they DO have time to play.
And somebody else already said it but I feel the need to reiterate: Cash shop items are special items, separate from the items you make in the game. Your crafting will not be affected.

being able to buy stuff with real cash that others work for months for sucks imo, I'd hate to have done for example the NPC armour plan thing. It has taken GoJ months of 30ppl + working together to get this stuff, and some nub could easily sign up and get it instantly.
wow great he'd have spent money to keep the game alive etc etc, no he'll just have killed a small part of the game by taking away the reason to work hard for anything. I wouldnt probably have participated in the NPC project and spent so many hours bored out of my skull if someone can just shortcut it.

Never, everrrrrrrrrr, in any game I've everrrrrrrrrrrrr played, do you EVER get drops or any other item that can be obtained IN GAME, in the cash shop. They are separate! Separate! S-e-p-a-r-a-t-e!
And the Ryzom.org people sound like whack-jobs, but I'll be donating to them if they can successfully win the bid.
