Just having an extra box doesn't suddenly mean you can slide it into the rack and make it do what the broken one did. The simple truth is that the hardware that mmo's run on tends to be expensive and there is a limit to redundancy for any system.
zanah wrote:Well the right thing would have been to have a disaster recovery plan in place that works... If the backup server is that messed up, how long does it take to replace it and rebuild a new one from the main server? Definitely not 12 hours+ and someone with a little bit of brains needs to make the call after 2 hours of downtime... Any way you look at it, they seem very amateurish to me.
Disaster recovery plans weigh different things differently. You have to consider cost, downtime, potential for dataloss, and all manner of other things. You also have to consider things like making a decision to rebuild a RAID array or go back to a point saved on tape. Tack on another important decision where you either run everything with no safety net, run some critical stuff with no safety net, or not run at all to prevent possibly needing to fall back to the last set of tapes. In short... 12 hours isn't completely unreasonable.

*rolls his eyes*

in an mmo, the ONLY data that is on disaster recovery is the character databases

everything else can be rebuilt from a master image, then patched up

if the backup 'server' is a mirror of the play server, were talking about a server farm with holes, you can't just bring a swiss cheese farm online

geesh

dont' people have lives?

*snickers* DANG I forgot to mention something, compaq, dell, IBM, HP, all have hard drives on back order for 3 months... so if they ran out of drives... forget 14 hours.. they have to go find someone with a hard drive that is probably scsi... and cost to much money...

I am betting a 2 day downtime.

raynes wrote:From what I am reading is that the normal server started back up but the backup server did not. They won't run the normal server without an operational backup. It's not that the normal server can't run without it, it's that they won't run without it. As much as it sucks, they are doing the right thing.

Of course this doesn't excuse 12 hours of down time. Maybe they will do something just for the NA customers to make up for this.....

(ok, it's a dream but let me have that dream just for a bit)

Actually raynes, your completely missing the point.
Any DECENT disaster recovery plan INCLUDES backups for backups.

Main server --> Falls back to back up server
Backup server --> Falls back to secondary backup
And if they have a serve dedicated to RUNNING the backups, then there should be a backup for it as well. It's a simple concept.. have a backup everything.

[QUOTE=ariwen]The problem is, we are in NA not Europe/France so they dont care how fast or how efficiently they get the problem fixed. They are focused more on the European/French customers, and not NA.

I couldnt agree more...that about sums it up...as evident from the fact that ours is down more than any other!

And as some moron asked.."dont you have lives?"...yes,but we also have paid accounts and its not unreasonable to expect to get what we pay for!

Well...you have to consider that it's easier for them to fix things and get organized on you know, their own continent.
