in most successful mmo's they have rp, pvp, and then normal servers. didnt ryzom used to have a kami and kara island basically?
acridiel wrote: You don´t realy thing that all those players discuraged by the current situations on the servers regarding factions, won´t put up thier own Kami/Karavan Haven for themselves and their friends?
Some will most certainly do.
if they want to be that self-centered, good for them.
acridiel wrote: As much as I´d love to have Ryzom survive, I´m not convinced that Xavier and his bunch will be able to keep the integrity of the World, or the community for that matter.
doesnt matter what Xavier and think once its GPL'd, anyone can make a server etc.
Edit: just checked the old budget data from free ryzom, estimated cost on one server with a year of hosting 31000 euro. everyone and their mother doesnt have that to drop.
acridiel wrote: Serveral Ryzoms will breed serveral communitys, wich will probably hassle over the things I stated up there.
If "Free Ryzom" winns, then it´s either the greatest thing that ever happend, if they are able to pull it off with Nevrax original spirit in mind and not too many "different Worlds",
or it´ll be a confusing jumble of alternative Ryzoms, where everyone can pick the one he likes best and scuable away over his/her visions of this world and why all else are "not the real thing".
i doubt the communities will fight among each other seeing as they wont share forums.

the GPL isnt a holy grail heh, but ryzom has already proven that it isnt going to be profitable. you would need to triple the number of subs before you could start to have money for new content.

Good point about the profit margin. If 31000 Euro a year is a decent estimate of server running cost, that means that the amount required to support server alone is roughly 200 people paying 15 euro a month. That number sounds familiar (200) possibly because I heard people ruminating that it was the number of players we had with paying accounts on Arispotle (approximations only, remember). I wish there were more, but when you put it that way -- no money to make anything with :/

Will gladly double my sub. I know that may not attract many new players, but I'll voluntarily do it.

Maybe just keep the same pay rate and do fund-raising. It doesn't have to make a profit, just has to support itself, more or less. If it becomes an open source project you no longer have to pay the devs, they do it for fun. :)

I'd commit to being a dev on the project, goodness knows I've done hundreds maybe thousands of hours of free programming and testing for far less interesting projects.

*goes digging for that Lua tutorial*
