Getting to 250 with no effort is cheating, and defeats the purpose of the game. Otherwise we would all start out with master skills on every level. The entire point of the game is to put effort in to the advancement of your avatar. If other players are using bots to do it, it creates an inbalance. I would completely be ok with botting if it was allowed by game rules.

I don't see it. Again:

1. These BMD's "Botters of Mat Destruction" seem to be fictional characters. I have yet to see or hear of an actual documented instance.

2. Who is cheated ? The only person who is cheated if the person doing the botting

Getting to 250 with no effort is cheating, and defeats the purpose of the game.

Whose purpose ? Unless your purpose is to "beat someone else to 250" I don't see how another person is affected.

The entire point of the game is to put effort in to the advancement of your avatar.

If that is truly the case, how am I affected by someone else's actions ? I don't see how what other people are doing affects the effort you put in to the advancement of your avatar

If they actually existed, given a choice between "botters" and "self appointed bot monitors", I'll take botters.

Thats one thing I love about Ryzom, if it was about the grind only - the game offers plenty of it. But unlike other games, where a max level character promises godlike strength, reputation and praise, the Ryzom way of playing is the way - not the goal.

Of course people say, wow! you mastered this and that, but the more important thing is the knowledge. Knowledge of the game, knowledge of your actions, knowledge of other people.

It's more worth to know spots, know where you dug in which level range, how to get there, meeting other diggers, sharing your information than lonely botting to 250. Levels don't mean so much on Atys as some wish them to do imho.

To say it blunt, all we do is constantly adding up numbers in the game database. Sounds like fun? No, certainly doesn't.

Still Ryzom is fun and if people decide to bot I don't see either who is harmed except themselves. Botting won't get you bosses killed nor does it produce amazing crafting results

a botted dig master with no knowledge of spots would be pretty useless indeed. harvesting is not just about the lvls
for me the bots just cheat themselves are most definatley don't have the staying power to stay in game long

Ok, seems that either you don't understand how some people play ryzom, or maybe your style of gameplay is solo oriented. Let me make some observations .
1. Outposts are a major point in the game.
2 They are very desirable for their mat and cat production
3. It requires high level players to succesfully obtain and hold an outpost
4. There are more guilds than outposts

These 3 things create an environment of competition amongst guilds. So if some guilds are using bots to quickly get their chars to level 250, this creates an unbalance in the game. My whole point is that the competitive aspect of the game becomes lame with players botting. Now, its possible that you may not participate in the competitive aspects of the game, and i can see why you would see botting as hurtfull to only the player doing the botting.

Which is of course, only your opinion. It's not a fact. I don't care about outposts, I get the catalyzers for free, and find the outpost pvp the worst implemented pvp i've seen in a mmorpg.

And I might actually imagine the lvl 250 pvp-ers to love to see some more competetion, so they might actually enjoy some bots because of that.

Like Arc said, for me it's the journey, not the goal.

The only other game I played as long as I have played Ryzom was Asheron’s call 1. There I watched as bots gradually took over the game world. I watched as this destroyed the community because we went from role playing and emersion, to me me power leveling. I watched as the competitive aspect of PvP compelled many to “keep up” thus felt they were forced to bot too in order to stay competitive, thus it spread like a virus.

Even if the competitive factor does not bother you, the fact that it bothers others means you are effected too because others leave and the nature of the community changes around you. I don’t think most here want that to happen to Ryzom.

Calling them BMD’s (m=massive) is actually very appropriate. The effect on Ryzom would be massive if they were allowed to take hold. In other games they are like a virus plague and have significant impact.

The great thing about Ryzom is that Bots seem to be kept at bay… so far… but…

FyrosFreddy they definitely DO exist. Three weeks ago, one of my guildies informed me that a brand new member of ours appears to be dig botting. I went and observed and this idiot was doing it right in front of Fairhaven stables. He would prospect to pop his own nodes, very slowly move, prospect again, very slowly move, dig, and repeat the pattern and locations. It’s actually very easy to identify a botter and you don’t have to be intrusive to observe. He would not respond to around, guild, or private chat. When he received the guild boot, still no reaction. I reported him, a CRS observed, and this character has not been online since.

I have seen, reported, and watched one other promptly removed from the game by a CSR for the same thing long ago, so just two for me, but they do exist. I won’t go looking for them, but if we all take notice when stumbling upon one, and report, we are doing ourselves a favor.

We have another type of bot in our midst… the heal bot. Some players with their dual accounts are truly dual-boxing and using only in-game macros to do this which is of course not cheating and fine. Others however are using more. I know people who have admitted to doing this, and who admit to having been banned for this.
