the major difference is anyone can contribute to furthering ryzom. right now only GF can, but imagine if Xtarsia and the others working on the game could make new content and put it out their to be used.

if the game becomes GPL'd anyone can run a server, or make changes on the game. popularity of servers comes down to competence then as there isnt a monopoly anymore.
Exactly, so we´d have, after a certain time, multiple Ryzoms competing for the players. Some with a more WoWish approach, serveral that will claim to be "the original", or "closest to the original", some where Atys won´t be recognisable at all for it´s new "Creators" Ideas for "his/her Ryzom" and so on.... :(

Some will churn out XP like there´s no tomorrow, some will be PvP only, some will be RP only, some will be a mixture, some will be SciFi Karavan ruled Empires, some will be Kami Communitys, with nothing to conquer but themselves.
You don´t realy thing that all those players discuraged by the current situations on the servers regarding factions, won´t put up thier own Kami/Karavan Haven for themselves and their friends?
Some will most certainly do.

As much as I´d love to have Ryzom survive, I´m not convinced that Xavier and his bunch will be able to keep the integrity of the World, or the community for that matter.
Serveral Ryzoms will breed serveral communitys, wich will probably hassle over the things I stated up there.
If "Free Ryzom" winns, then it´s either the greatest thing that ever happend, if they are able to pull it off with Nevrax original spirit in mind and not too many "different Worlds",
or it´ll be a confusing jumble of alternative Ryzoms, where everyone can pick the one he likes best and scuable away over his/her visions of this world and why all else are "not the real thing".
Call me pessimistic in this respect, but once people get to do "thier own thing" with something, it´ll be Hell for other people.

Beat me to death with a trout for my heathen views of the holy grail of Open Source, but I will probably not be part of it.

I totally agree Acridiel :)

we will have the community breaks in several parts, each claiming the 'real' ryzom would be their server.....

Just the end of this wonderful community.

we don't have to convince them, that's the point. We are not in the position to convince anyone unless we have brothers in the shareholders council or so.

Nothing is seen with more lack of respect than hardcore gamers defending their world. Been there did that, and got my share of bittnerness when SWG went puff.

What we can do is try to our best make known that:
1. Ryzom is for sale
2. Ryzom had very good reviwes in the past (not from players, from proffessional magazines)

Get emotional and lose all credit. Get logical and work with plain arguments, keep it simple, and you have a chance to get to the ears you want to reach.
That simple.

If you start to explain how much you love Ryzom and what's your opinion about games, or Ryzom in special, the letter will land to spam folder faster than the one selling some 3 tons of pure diamonds from deep heart of Africa.
And don't mention about paying more please. I know you would, I know I would at any minute. But this is not how market departments work. They sell MMOs like soap or cars. It takes something very different from a hard core player assertions to make them belive MMOs are emotional content items that don't respect general market rules. And it's not our business to make them change that view. Our target is make known Ryzom is for sale, for a very short period of time. If you have contact data for Ryzom sellers, provide it, make it a click away.

Nothing more, nothing less. If you dilute this information with feelings and promisses and personal appreciations, it will get lost, and the effort wasted.

I disagree. we need to be emotional...passionate and sincere.
