I just want to say that I can't wait for this to happen :)

It sounds very cool, and I'm sure we'll have loads of people exploring the various caverns on the opening night. Wouldn't miss it for the world :D

But learning plans from the Rangers and then being awarded small amounts of materials that only work in those plans would perhaps work. Heh, I wonder how many Kamists and Karavaneers would eventually pick up those plans and materials in that case? Seen the non-factional if not opposing nature of the Rangers.

But no supremes or Kitin larva; that' s just all we need for it to get farmed.
sounds like the temple construction plans.. so we know it can be done :D
I dont understand how the war fanatics could be opposed to fighting the Kitins, unless they see it as a lessening of attention on their favourite toy.

So plans, and mats to craft those plans.

It's a kitin lair, why shouldn't you be able to find Basic, Fine, maybe even Choice, Kitin Larvae? Perhaps kitin like to move their youngsters around the place from time to time, maybe at various stages of development? With about the same drop rate as herbivore mats (frustrating :) ).

I think hunters that don't like to forage, but do like to craft some of their own things, would find this a very welcome resource, but it wouldn't threaten any artisan's trade.

1. Consumables that don't suck or disable your normal boosts.
2. Being able to learn a new crafting plan, as a reward for beating up these kitin nests. Some sort of special anti-kitin armour with good values against the most common kitin attacks, or armour rewards that are HEAVILY specialised to such an end.
3. Crystals - an independent non-PvP revenue stream for Crystals is needed, R2 will likely help with that, but this could be good too.
4. Jewels of similar proportions of ability/longevity as th existing boss jewels (eg split bonus).
5. Kitin larvae.
6. A small number of 'OP' mats. (again an alternate non PVP way to get them).
7. Supreme PR mats (again, a non PVP way to get them).

Basically using this new PvE content to counterbalance the more recent new content.
Don't forget the all important 'Kitin Slayer' title, that would be enough for Zok to ready his mace. :D

Generic raw mats, in the more immersive form of various grade larva seems good :D

Thinking about it :)

*** I dream on the idea of finding new Kitin races, still unknown to hominkind, newer landscapes that are different to the known Prime root tunnels, watching the intelligent behavior that has not been seen before, discovering new variants of kitin that do not correspond to those found elsewhere, harvesting new materials that are yet to be used by crafters... ***

I have hopes that it will not just be just a remix of existing building blocks :D

Here' s a little idea:

what about the stocks already present ingame? Would there be a chance to have all of them activated? They' re basically just scenery for now.

The news of the new Kitin Lair and the rewards attatched to it made me come up with another train of thoughts, possibly inspired on what others may have said before. Obviously almost no one ventures willingly to these stocks to clear if of it's occupants, save for the odd official event when there' s a queen or something different altogheter or during the very few player organised assaults. (not taking into account those loonies who want to grab kitin larva)

Repopulate and activate all the stocks AND give them a timer (reasonably slow) at which rate the population over there grows. (as a bonus, link Kitin larva to Kitin presence; the more nasties, more larva. No kitins, no larva) Now if players don' t take it upon themselves to thin the kitin population they' ll have a gigantic infestation over there, spreading slowly outwards. Untill the swarm reaches such a mass it finally needs looking for much tastier prey; so let them conduct raids or attacks on tribal camps and eventually head towards the homin cities.

'It was a beautifull afternoon in Yrkanis. Birds singing, yubos barking, Jayce whacking his mallet and producing the finest Matisian jewelry. He had heard reports of kitins amassing nearby, but he wasn' t afraid or worried. Wasn't he the one who led hominking on a succesfull assault against that dreaded kitin queen. Then the smell of ozone and the rateling sound of spells rip the peaceful atmosphere apart, huge insects rip the guard's heads of their torsos and tear down the gates of a once proud city. The queen had come back for Jayce, and this time it was personal. No more 'naked-wipe' amberflicks.'

Rewards? What rewards? Saving your own bums and getting rid of an infestation isn' t rewarding enough? This would be a perfect example of how we can shape this world; if we don' t take it upon ourselves to clear the kitins out, our archnemesis, then don' t we deserve to become overrun?

Ofcourse I have no clue if this would be even remotly possible. But hey, one can dream, right? ;)

iphdrunk wrote:Thinking about it... well it's pretty hard to come up with a satisfactory reward scheme. So comments welcome:

For starters, we assume that the ideal, utopic world where players would participate for the sake of participating is not applicable globally (some players would gladly). In other words, it is not absurd to state that globally, players expect rewards.

So what kind of rewards seem appropriate? equipment? materials? fame? xstals?
I may be missing something major with the following suggestion, but this could be the solution to the "You gotta go into a PvP area to get supreme materials."

IF (and that's a big "IF") it were balanced properly, I'd see this as an alternative way to get supreme materials. Since the PvP aspect has been removed (I hope), it needs to be quite a bit harsher than PR with respect to the mobs alone.

That would ensure that it doesn't eclipse crafters, because if it does, I'll probably cancel my subscription the day after it's released. I joined Ryzom largely becase it's one of the very few games where crafting is a viable and useful profession. All too often, devs decide that the best items MUST drop from mobs, and by doing so they make crafting largely useless.

Feel free to tear the above argument to shreds. :)

-- Edit --

Notes that the "anti-material farm" community are already opposed.

Prepares counter that PR is already the same way, and the game hasn't exploded because of it.

Where this should be headed is to consider that to get high end mats in EvE, you need a serious mining party. As in three groups:

1. Miners, who actually dig the stuff out of the asteroids.
2. Haulers, who cart the stuff of to the closest available station.
3. Security, guys in big means nasty ships that blow up any NPC's that spawn (and they do), as well as "convincing" other players that this roid belt is spoken for.

In the Ryzom world, you wouldn't need the Haulers, but with what I'm suggesting you would need the Security detail. Meaning a mining trip into the Kitin Lair is not something you put together on the spur of the moment, with just a couple of people, it's somthing that needs at least as much planning as a trek, probably moreso, and possibly more fighters than miners.

As in make it tough enough that it can't be farmed by someone on their own.

On the downside, that means we're heading in another possibly unwanted direction: that being the "raid or quit" mentality that drove me out of WoW. Content that is only accessible to large groups worries me.

Also notes that Rundll will probably go ballistic if this is implemented. :P
