A 'tank' would be the sandbag in front that takes the hits while distracting the beastie with his/her beating stick, while in the meantime the yokels in the back can have their cup of tea and goof around with fireworks.
Healer and mage are both magic class but use a different magic branch I guess; healer uses deffensive magic, healing actually; whereas the mage would throw offensive spells, offensive magic aka Elemental, around in combat.

I'll need to go to the main Ryzom website and find out what a "tank" is... heh.
What's the difference between a Healer and a Mage?
Think it's universal MMORPG lingo
A Tank is a meatshield; someone with full heavy armour taking all the damage in a fight. It's his job to protect the spellcasters, as they have lighter armour and should focus on their casting without interruption. The Tank do not necessarily need to make a lot of damage.
A Healer concentrates on healing the Tank. The Healer is a Mage, just focusing on healing spells, defensive magic.
A Mage, also known as a Nuker, make the most damage but is weak and need a Tank's protection. A Mage uses offensive magic.
I think this goes for every MMORPG out there, and this was one of the reasons I quit WoW. I would be too bored just healing-healing-healing for hours. Here you can do what you want, not what you chose 720 hours ago to play. Go Ryzom!!

PS ... if or when you decide to level healing, 100 is a great goal -- healing strength doubles at that point :)

in a game where one can have it all without having to make new characters its pointless not to level up everything eventually lol

LOL, first I wanted to just be a healer. I was the highest level for a while, then got bored to tears, so I went for full out mage. Then fight, well for the HPs! Of course, more time gone, I'm ~120 in a few crafts, ~150 in a couple forage skills, ~120 in a few fight skills...

In Saga of Ryzom, everyone will have soon or later all kind professions on same character, mage/fighter/harvester/crafter, because it has so high benefits.

...Well, all, with the help of a few truly kind and generous folks I've met ingame, I was able to gain enough skill points to get my Magic Start. I fried some furries until I was able to get the Heal Life and Life Aura actions.
...and, though it may not be that sensible to some (or most), I have decided to remain magicless after all. I have held in deep consideration all that has been explained to me about the ups and downs of being plain (without magic).
On the one hand, I'm told that it is the basis of Homin life; Can't have one (tank) w/out the other (Healer). On the other hand, I'm told that I'm free to be whatever char I want to be, and though it will be significantly more challenging to play this game w/out magic, as long as I am true to the skill I choose (being melee in battle only), it will not take away from the excitement and fun.
I've also been assured that I'll still be worthy to help fight in teams or as a member of a guild, as I will be a mighty tank, contributing in high skill and endurance of the battle (HP).
And, most important of all, when working in a team, to be sure to let all know that I am magicless by choice. I am a Homin who will not beg for help; if I die, it was my choice to take on the challenge, therefore I will respawn and face the dp. And if anyone wishes to help rez me along the way, I thank you now, as well as then. But I will not take advantage of anyone elses' abilities by asking for rezzes.
I seem to be writing a book here, so I will end now. Thank you all for your input, warning and advice.
See you ingame! ;8^)

Just a side note. A well developed mage is able to deliver up to 5k damage. A fighter is restricted at what he wears...

Using level 200 spells with a 90something amp, double stanza, I hit max for 2.4k. A double stanza 250 spell should hit for just over 3k. So what am I missing? Is there a hidden quad stanza available at 250 or something? :P
