I'm sure i'll get the hang of it eventually :)

I'm never too bothered about messing up a character. It's part of the fun learning a game later on to laugh at stupid mistakes you make hehe.

I don't understand stanzas at the moment but I am sure as I go along I will do :)

I ain't too bothered that the game isnt complete yet, I have yet to play a game at release that was. Just finished playing a month in EQ2 which technically is a brilliant mmo but has some really stupid bugs that are unnacceptable for new mmo's like chat box settings not saving, and npc's turning invisible.

The kill tasks I have done so far have given some nice money so I am happy to do those, and the game already after only a small time has me excited.

One other thing I wanted to ask, which might sound stupid to ask, is about starting race and where you start. Basically I am a fan of rainy/snowy/stormy weather in games, and I read that the weather systems in the game vary through the different areas in the game. So is there any race that would start in a tropical or rainy/stormy area, as the one i chose starts in the desert.

Ah new there was something else, how can I tell the difficulty of a monster/enemy npc? Can't find anything in manual.

Also, is there only the one server? I only had one to choose from in the server list, hope its the right one lol.
Anyhoos I've rambled enough, thanks again :)

That would be either a Zorai or Matis character - both places are fairly tropical, although Zorai has the closest climate to tropics - lots of steam humidity :-) Zorai and Matis also have their fair share of snow in winter.

You should be on the Arispotle shard/server, for the European English community.

I'm seriously considering the idea of 'newbie island assistance' - making a new char or two, and setting aside some time in the week to play these chars on the starter islands. Even if it's just a few hours a week, there could be a chance of helping new players, and making sure everyone on the 14 day trial at least makes it to the mainland :-) It'd be great to then see those players when I log back in with Dazman :-)

Ok well i'd best check my shard when I log in tonight as I only had one to choose from best to ensure i'm on the right one lol. On the website under my details, it says "Community UK" so hopefully it's the right server.

I'll take a look at the other starting races and areas and see what i'm happyest with.

Hopefully I will of seen enough during my 14 day trial to sign up for the game proper, will just have to see, although initial impressions of the game and the community are really very good :)

Biff.

Well about the races:

Fyros live in the desert so not much seasonal stuff to see there, even no rain. It sometimes can be cloudy dough. This seems the most popular race amongst the players, at least it seems the most populated terretory.

Matis live in the forrest, they have thier seasons and it fairly popular amongst the players.

Tyker are the cute ones. You should pick this race if you like swimming, because a lot of thier terretory is water. There seem to be quite a few Tyker, but a lot of them seem to be wandering off do the Fyros desert and the Matis forrests. (maybe thats why Fyros & Matis terretory seem the most popular).

Zoraï live in a dense jungle, they have thier fair part of rain and snow. The jungle is dense and dampy with an occasional mob hiding in the bushes. I've found the Zoraï terretory the most easy to travel trough, but hard to leave. The Zoraï race is the least popular amongst the players and seems to be on the most isolated terretory.

Racial differences and impacts of fame will be important in the upcoming patches. Currently there won't be any difference in char development and abilities amongs the races. There is a difference regarding fame dough.
There are 2 powerful fractions on Athys, these are the ones who know the secrets of metal (karavan) and the secrets of the land (kami).
Matis and Tyker worship the karavan, Fyros and Zoraï like the kami more. The mask you see the Zoraï wear is sewed onto thier faces at birth, in respect of Jena, thier godess. Fyros are not such "believers", they don't build temples but they just like the kami a bit more.
History tells us that the Matis race are the most agressive ones. They've been in big epic battles with the Fyros on sevral occasions (and eventually lost every time :D ) and they have enslaved the Tyker untill the Fyros came for thier resque.
Zoraï live an isolated life, they tend to spend a lot more of thier time building temples, then fighting battles. Due the importance of thier religion, I don't see them working together with the Tyker or the Matis any time in the future.
Tyker supply the Fyros with water in return of protection against the Matis. So I see them working together with the Fyros race again, but there is a religion problem, ...
The Fyros are binded to the Zoraï by religion and to the Tyker due historic events, but Fyros, as the most fierce warriors, are vunerable and depend on the Tyker for thier water supply. Fyros are also responsible for the current situation on the planet. The released the great fire, wich destroyed a big part of the Matis terretory (the nort Matis desert) and thier miners started the big kittin war when they hit upon a cave and met the kittin for the first time. I don't know if the other races will hold the Fyros responable for this, it could turn against them sometime in the (near?) future.
Tyker are hard to judge. Because the worship the Karavan, I don't see them working together with Zoraï much. They were enslaved by the Matis, but religion binds them. The karavan have proven to be strong enough to unite the Matis and Tyker against the Kami races (Zoraï and Fyros) during last 2 big events on all 4 servers. I don't know if the Tyker will settle thier differences with the Matis and bring the Fyros race in trouble by cutting thier water supply, or will they remain loyal and keep depending on the Fyros??? If the Tyker grow strong enough to stand up against the Matis or even become thier allies it isn't looking good for the Fyros.

So, thats some background info about the races, jonhop, I hope it will help you make the choice that fits you. You could read up some more on the ryzom website about the history of the different races and fractions.
Currently, it doesn't matter much wich race you pick, but it sure will matter if the story develops more in the coming months ..

Thanks Mrozzy! :)

I have read through that, it's a very interesting read :)

I always love to read up the story and lore in a new game as it gets you into the game :)

The Matis sound like the bad guys from what i've read so I would not play one of those, I'm too nice to play a bad guy hehe :D And the Tyker are a little too cutesy for me, i'm not good enough to play one of those hehe :)

I had picked Fyros but I think Zorai might be living in a place I would like better. If I picked them would I have trouble meeting others to group up with if they are low population?

One more thing (sorry)

How can I tell the difficulty of a monster/enemy npc? Can't find anything in manual, and how do I know if monsters are aggressive or not? - Read they added this in the patch for today so I will see when I log in in a few hours :)

And finally the most important question of all, how do you turn off the UI for taking screenshots? :D

3 more hours till I can go home and play ! Yay :) Hope the servers are back up hehe :)

Thanks yet again :)

You can see the dificulty by:

- the prefix of thier name
- the amount of stars in the target (t) window when you select the mob and the background color of the little icon with the stars in (each color means a different region). Read up in the patch notes about that.
- By experience :D

You can see if they are agressive if they attack you :D

- You can press "0" and wich looks toward your char (can't move the camera dough)
- By pressing buttons you can turn all windows from the ui off (press k to look for right keys)

No, its just a little harder dough.
I know lots of players advise to remain on the newbie terretory untill you are lvl 20-30ish. This was true in the early days of the game, since none was able to assit you once you are at the mainland. Now you are able to get assistance from some higher level players on the mainland (Type /who to see who's in the region, send a /tell to get in touch) and more and better gear is available (eg: jewels for example, wich gives you extra hp).
I advise you to leave the mainland once you know the basic mechanics of the game, when you know how to make actions, what they do and how to hunt for mobs, how to tell if they are strong or not, ...

Good luck
