There is a executable that allows you to do some of the game configuration from outside the client. There you may choose if the client runs in Auto/Direct X/OpenGL mode. Default is the Auto mode.

To run the client in OpenGL mode I additionally had to disable Desktop Composition, technically falling back to Vista Home Basic Desktop, that way all the fancy DirectX desktop effects are disabled, and the client starts smoothly.

Well, it´s a simple Vista fact, that most programms need to be installed with admin rights. There´s no way "our" devs could change Vista to solve this.
Anyway, we could´ve thought of it too and warned you about it as we all probably made the same mistake at the start. xD

You don't need to install with admin rights, if you install the client to the program files folder in you users home folder. eg. "C:\Users\<put in username>\Program files" or for 64-bit os "C:\Users\<put in username>\Program files (x86)"
