To me, the hard part is not judging which things are of an appropriate level to attack or having to learn which creatures are social and which are not.
The hard part is not knowing which cretures will attack you on sight. It is hard to explore or to harvest in difficult areas if you cannot tell from a distance which cretures must be avoided and which you can simply ignore.
This is easy when you are in the beginner area or the area around your capital. The further you move out the greater the variety is. Some of the most threatening creatures in appearance and sound or even name are harmless while a smaller less agressive looking creature nearby will effortlessly make lunch of you.
