well if it was on 'how to effectively handle the goo problem" etc and run in a way that let people debate that issue and not start tangents sure.

My issue would be that people would run on a tangent and if person A said something (which was somewhat made up because its all made up) that person B didn't think fit with the lore then the debate would suddenly become about the accuracy of their story telling and fact making up abilities with regard to the lore instead of "how to effectively handle the goo problem"

I think that made sense but if not ignore me as I often dont make sense hehe

I think it's a good idea. I don't see why people can't try, and learn how to properly debate. Unfortunately I can't go to the mainland, so I couldn't participate.
There are quite a few types of discussions you could have, in character or out of character. whether you want to debate the mechanics of the game, it's story, or in-game stuff like religion or politics or technology. I often wondered if there wasn't some way homins could find a way to scale the tall cliff walls of their lands somehow.

I don't think a trial island debate would be too difficult to do. The main reason for Ring is so that the most people can come together, on Ranger island, your already stuck together! ;)

So many similair options, and yet the opinion "Debates of this kind is best carried out out of game" doesn't appear...

I don't see many kinds of discussions suited for carrying out in-game. Possible exceptions are grand scale faction meetings, to figure a battleplan to turn the tides of war or something, which ultimately would be best solved by a couple guild leaders coordinating their efforts internally, so maybe not even that would work.

In the end, if it's supposed to be constructive and available to the public, the forums are better suited. Any and all arguments are preserved for reviewing and consideration, you are not bound by making it on time, and you can make an argument of any length without interruptions.

I bet if you came up with a topic that actually attracts a crowd, the meeting would be killed off by its own succes - a small chat interface integrated into a game is just not geared for serious debates involving large groups.

Hey,
I voted "No" (no offense ;) ) because when I get online I really don't enjoy myself sitting in a corner discussing things.

I'd come provided it was IC and the topic is interesting for me. Not sure whether I will have something to say, but listening to debates is interesting.
