There is no race that is better at this or better at that gameplay wise. I suggest if you really don' t have an oppinion on it to try out one avatar till you get a good grasp of the basics. Then read up on the lore on the official website on the races, the factions, the world. Or you could just start reading that while patching
Perhaps that might give you some insights.

When choosing your character's race, remember that your race doesn't necessarily dictate your faction.
I roleplay profusely, but I follow a strict definition of RP. If you really want to get into heavy/full RP, send me a tell ingame. If you're looking for more casual/semi-RP, I'm probably not the person to ask.

He, a curious one you are
About the player events, yes they happen, and like Kye said, The Samsara hosts a pubnight every two weeks and did some dagger-fight-tournaments as well. Then there is Trixie, who organized some very nice events. And there is Evolution who does an event now and then.
And beside that, there is also a trek to other countries organized which is one of the best events ingame.
The different races do not really matter, except that there is a diffence in mood. (I dont know how else to describe it) The matis are more stiff and royal, the fyros are proud warriors, the zorai mystical and meditating, and the tryker are silly liberals. (I don't say all the players who play a certain race are this, just that there is a different mood for every race)
About the questing. I miss some good quests, but at the same time, this game gave as much freedom as possible, so you can make your own. (And hopefully even do that better with R2)

There a an incresing number of SWG refugees (now become advanced and master members
) to Ryzom, send some of
Team Spirit a /tell like Faa, Spangle or Jawaa (type /tell Faa message) they are all from SWG making a name for themselves in the tryker lands. Most of all dont accept the first guild that throws you an invite, there are certain guilds that camp the TP`s waiting for refugees to appear :/ take your time, get to know some people and enjoy yourself
edit: disclaimer: i`m not from team spirit, just think you sound like you may fit into their guild

My advise is if you are tryker look into team spirit or evolution, fyros samsara, zorai twilight whispers or Merchants or void and matis create another char cos matis sucks
you can find who to contact in all of those guilds in the guild section under
list of guilds

The matis do not suck. *cries* I was under the impression that you liked me Kye. Now I'm all upset. Seriously tho mojo, all you need to do is pick a character that fits you best since your race has no effect on how you play the game or what your faction will be, well not really. Maybe you want to read up on the lore and each races' information. It's somewhere on the Ryzom main page, but I'm to lazy to do the linkage thing.

Don't blame them for that Kye. Would you want to live in Matis?

As well as "/tell Renots" if you are on the island still. I'm keeping him on the Zorai starting island and putting up Choice +5hp(for now) q20 Daggers/Spears/Amps for nice an cheap. Plus, ill gladly answer any questions that newcomers typically have. Unfortunately, my usual playtime is late, after midnight EST.
