I don't think choosing one of these necassarily helps this problem. I have mine set on OpenGL and every time I go into the game... GRRR I have to reset the size and move my boxes around as well. I am not even sure what happened. Wasn't having any problems with this, didn't change anything aside from making it run on OpenGL but it ran fine for some time even after that, than BAM one day... and ever since same problem.

I don't know what it is I did, other than go thru every single option the game had and set it how I wanted BEFORE playing the game, there are config options in the config utility, as well as IN the game itself, make sure you also have the same desktop selected in the game since it has 4 different desktops to config.

Kierstad has the correct solution, but I have a slight addition. I always was frustrated by needing to adjust resolution and window size each login. I went to the external configuration, and switched to OpenGL instead of Auto. I still had the same problem as before, so I switched to Direct3D and the problem was solved. Maybe which setting works depends on your video card. I have an Nvidia card and Direct3D worked for me.
The path to the external configuration is:
Program Files\Ryzom\Configure
The icon is a white box with a gear in it.
Oh, and I had the same problem with getting 2 Disc 2 Cds in my box, but when taking it back to the store, I found a box with 1 of each disk, and the game has worked fine for me. It's most likely just an issue with settings, or maybe a bad installation.
I know its frustrating to have so many problems with a new game. Try out the different video settings and hopefully you'll be playing soon.

I'm having trouble getting it to start in fullscreen mode too. My video card is an ATI 9800 Pro. It will start fullscreen if I use the D3D setting, however, when night comes in game, anything in the distance turns a golden color. When I use OpenGL setting, it doesn't startup fullscreen, but things aren't gold. If anyone has found a fix for ATI cards, plz let me know.

Just an FYI, if you need to change from D3D to OpenGL, once you get there just click "display" and choose OpenGL and hit apply. (when I had mine on auto, supposedly it chooses the best for your computer, but it kept choosing D3D and oh no way was that good for my computer) Also make sure when you load up the game, it will ask you if you want to change to D3D, say no.
Actually, to be honest, some cards can't do OpenGL without causing problems. My FX 5900XT wouldn't run in OpenGL and kept crashing. I set it to Direct3D and it hasn't crashed since. So I suggest to anyone to check both modes before giving up.

I'm having a similar problem, and after reading this thread I'm still stuck.
Basically, the screen size is too large. At the character selection screen, I don't have all five buttons down the left side, because they are too big, and I don't have a "Create New" button at the bottom right.
I switched to Open GL from Auto, that didn't do it. (By the way, that screen is too big too, I didn't have an "Apply" button, but hitting Enter seemed to do the trick.)
Any suggestions or ideas?

This problem was happening to me, too, but after going into the config program and setting D3D as the default and maximizing on startup, I no longer have to change the resolution and then change it back to get full screen with no clipping.
I also noticed that I seem to be getting better framerates now. Now if I could only get the game to quit crashing to desktop ever couple hours...

The "gold stuff" at night in the background is just the draw distance kicking in. To get rid of it turn up the draw distance settings in your graphics options while in game.
ATI users, make sure your video bios is up to date and the driver is new. If it isn't:
Download direct x 9.0C here
http://www.microsoft.com/directx/
In Add Remove Programs in your control panel, remove the ATI driver.
If you can find a driver cleaner online, use it as well to remove all traces of the old ATI driver.
Install new driver and reboot.
Run Ryzom configuration utility
Choose Display and click on Direct 3D
Choose a resolution, colour depth and REFRESH RATE that your monitor can handle. IF you don't know what refresh rate it should be set at just check your advanced display properties under monitor.
To help get rid of some of that golden night sky, click on display details and move the slider for landscape all the way to the right. If you have a slow system turn of EAX under your sound options, Apply, hit ok and start up the game.
If it runs slow, then turn your graphics card settings to performance in your advanced display options. Turn off things like antialiasing and trilinear filtering.
In the game you can tune everything else in your graphics options, your draw distance and cloud quality being key to those golden skies.
