Ryzom is one of the most original non-tolkien based worlds out there. With it's own ecosystem, philosophy, races and cultures, It's own religious factions so why isn't there supposed to be RP here?

And Why do we hear this statement from a representative of a supposedly semi RP guild? (at least so it says in guild list) :)

As a semi guild we can switch between OOC and IC modes without telling that to anybody ;) (We were mentioned in the thread start as a high-RP guild so we're kinda entitled -I hope - to comment our RP-level in here :) )

In all honesty one of the reasons I enjoy Ryzom very much is the quite refreshing world without all the usual fantasy cliches - and even with some post holocaust grittiness added in without too much cyberpunk feel. The world itself doesn't enforce upon us any lingual style, except maybe some that can be gleaned from the "official sources".

When I start a new MMORPG game creating a pure character concept starting with some thoughts on behaviour, my personal goals and then skills I try to concentrate on. For the characters I'm definitely not a mini-maxer, but due the skill structure in Ryzom I've needed to do some changes to my personal view of my character (I first thought of concentrating on defensive magic and crafting, but then noticed I need ele for some stuff and hitpoints being mandatory in healing and digging had to take some fighting etc.) I think I have lots of RP thinking invested in what my character wants to do and how he is proceeding towards those goals. As for myself I tend to prefer exploring and more freeform playstyle with occassional grinding session thrown in.

Ingame talk can then be much more hairy matter, I try to speak as proper english in game as I can and have time to due to reasons with my job. (Me is semilegendary typoer though :o) On the other hand Arispotle - although "english only" shard - does have a big population of people not speaking english natively and for whom the "net english" can be the only proper english they know. Then there's always the matter of battle languages, and "net english" has some very striking similarities of those, because both have have the ability of transferring information between people extremely rapidly and with less effort. Of course the l337 n00bkillers give shortened english a very bad rap, but with time spent in MMORPG voluntary support staff ages ago cured me of seeing shortened form as only something used by the seamier side of community. Every language has the differences between speakers and their origin and US or British players can probably emulate accents and dialects. For everybody else - even if the talking is understood doing the same can be extremely hard for non-natives - and speaker accents and dialect use can be very nice touch in both tabletop as MMORPG roleplay.

Ryzom all in all is very small and close-knit community in it's own way, and that means nobody or no guild in here can live in the RP-vacuum with all the non/semi-RP guilds closed outside - and this is I think is extremely good thing for the community and the RP guilds themselves and something I'd like to stay as it is in Ryzom. On the other hand from guild standpoint having a nice amount of members means that there almost has to be some compromises on RP level - at the moment it isn't really feasible in my opinion in most cases to go only for certain player type.

If approached in RP manner i tend to anwer likewise. If meeting a new player I can't be sure of, I try to find out which approach is appropriate.

I believe Rushin means to say it's old Engish that seems out of place in Ryzom, not RP.

Seeing that homins in reality probably do not speak English in the first place, I'd have to agree on that. Their language is translated to English for us, so it seems kind of silly to use old English. Unless ofcourse if your intention is to play someone who speaks an old homin language. Provided there is such a thing. Actually, do we know anything at all about homin language? It seems from the stories that even in very old times all the different race spoke one common language. Maybe the Karavan thought the homins language long ago?

But then, the "thee's and thou's and my fair ladies" isn't just old English, it can be also be seen as ceremonial English. If you're playing, say, a Matis noble, then that sort of language does seem fitting.

But I agree wholeheartedly with Rushin that it all depends on the individual and how they like to play their character. No better way to spoil the RP than by trying to force others to roleplay the way you want them to.

lol, you missed my point i think. I was saying that the whole olde english way of speaking seems a bit out place in ryzom, not rp in general :p

Well sure thing, but RP (the way I understand it) does not mean only olde english? now does it?

And as this thread was originally devoted to the search for RP guilds and not to the search for "Shakespearean rejects" on Ryzom let's get it back on track, shall we?

So to sum up there are not that many Hi RP "guilds" (not taking individuals into consideration).

The Red Ribbon Army has been named, The Samsara somewhat... I'd dare to put Evolution in the same row...

I wonder what would the representatives of these guilds say. Whad is RP in Ryzom for them and how do they see and do it?

Well I agree its about finding the high rp guilds but first we have to agree or acknowlege what high rp is and what those who say they rp a lot think it is. For me it is as I said sticking to a set personality as such. But there's many a mmorpg player who think that your only high rp if you you speak the shakespearian way etc is what I was raising and I always found it annoying to be cosidered as not roleplaying just for the language I use, whereas often many of the shakespeare types I often found didn't follow a set personality at all and their use of language was often innacurate or innaproprite, I was just in general interested to see what other peoples view on this and other role playing aspects was, sorry if I brought it off topic.

Yeah! Old english doenst make you a roleplayer - roleplaying is becoming a character and stick to a concept.

"Thou sucketh, i willst pwneth thou"

Well as you can see, i can roleplay amazingly well by just using old english!

Consistently representing your role and maintaining a 'theatrical illusion' of the world is just half of what roleplay is and in my opinion should not be seen as 'more roleplaying' than the other half.

To illustrate, consider whether a hypothetical 'high-RP' guild is actually roleplaying if (even though they like to speak in old English, never converse out-of-character, and write incredible poetry) they do not play their role under the context of the game and instead introduce notions and ideas that the game developers certainly point away from or do not expect to see, like, atheism, scientific determinism, or worse yet, open defiance to the supposedly revered leaders of the nations, like I felt in the pre-Ep2 war council.

Certainly it is not entirely impossible for someone on Atys to develop atheist views or see his own prophecies, but that is in my opinion very far from the central part of the ongoing story and is clearly not what Nevrax wishes to see. The problem I see is such persona can be carried from game to game easily without having to take into consideration the plausibility of a person under the premise of the lore being able to develop such views and characters. Is that necessarily a better piece of roleplay than say, Doubletap's constant devotion to his goddess just because he talks ooc? Maybe, but maybe not.

Your occasional roleplayer,
Chronosfera - Amp crafter and user (ele, heal, OA, DA, boxing)
Atys Paladins - Veneratio etiam Sanctimonia
