There is no 'best', the least populous is the Zorai but they need more players, so if you are one stick with it
The more populous are Tryker, Matis and Fyros.
Statistics don't really vary, you just get some subtly different resistances.
The 'optimum' starter pack choice is one of everything EXCEPT fight, which you can always do anyway, but it really doesn't make a difference as you can always develop the other skill paths by spending a few points anyway.

I agree with Jyudas, unless you feel you've really messed up your character, stick with it.
Mind you it isn't really possible to mess it up, you just have to do a bit more work to 'put it right'.
The game's flexibility in the skill system means there are no hard and fast rules. You do what you want.

The races don't make any difference from a stats point of view. However they do in terms of no of active players, and general alignment with a faction.
I think that in order of no of players with most first it is something like Matis, Fyros, Tryker, then Zorai.
If you want to role play then you best do some reading about the backgrounds to the races to find the one you will fit with best.
I have found that Tryker is the eaiest race to start with as you have lots of water to run off into if you start getting into trouble. Having said that I dont think it is that big a deal.
Everyone agrees that getting off the start isle early on and moving to the mainland is a good idea. Two reasons really. More people about to ask for help/advice/team with. Second reason that I have is that it stops you getting into what on the mainland would be bad habits as the creatures behave differently.
As to what packs to pick as a starter then magic, harvest, craft is a popular one. Most folks say dont pick a fighter pack as you can easily learn that from nothing. There have been various postings in the beginners guide section covering this so have a bit of a browse through those. Most end up also pointing out that you cannot really make a broken character as whatever you start with you can move off in a totally different direction without a serious problem. Later on when you look back the choice of start packs will be a small thing compared to all the other choices of what to spend your hard earned skill points on.
Theres nothing really to stop you making several characters of different races and seeing how quickly you can find others to join up with.

have to agree with Jyudas, Philu an Gwythion, you can´t really mess up with skills...
i started a Zorai with 2x fight and craft...
and my highest now are healmagic and diggin
, had to put up a little bit more work tho to get and lvl these.
if you want to have the most choices at the begining choose 1 of magic, craft and harvest each(you´ll have basic melee attack for free) and you can lvl anything right away(tho you have to buy yourself a dagger/sword to lvl fight).
well and about race they differantiate(i hope i did spell that right lol) only in resistances and later in the higherlvl spells(alltho you can buy the other racespells too..if you have the points).
but if you choose Zorai i will surely give you a hearty welcome
, just give me a /tell Lyrthis in game and we´ll look how i can help you

Resistances and protections are different.

Fair point they are. However that hasn't made any race stronger than any other as far as I can tell.

best starter packet is 1 craft, 1 harvest, 1 magic (ie no fighting). Ultimately in the long run this wont make a difference.
the BEST race is not an easy question to answer. The more populted races are Fyros and Matis. These days zorai seem to be getting more players too and the trykers are kinda starting to dwindle
