Further to previous replies, sound is your friend. Learn the sounds of the different mobs and keep an ear out when you travel. It's amazing how many times I've stopped short of a Varinx that I couldn't see because of that hair raising yapping they make (and yes I call it hair raising because it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up).
Also, herbivores are your friends - for example watch a bunch of Bodocs when a Gingo or other predator comes near. They shift about restlessly, increase their calls to warn the herd, and then stampede. Believe me, you see a herbivore herd freaking out in PR (or anywhere else) then the smart money is on stopping and seeing what's upset them. This is especially useful as Kinchers seem to go into stealth mode and stop roaring when attacking.
