ALL modern games feature this kind of technology. How obvious the effect is depends completely on how advanced the graphics are, and how many objects need to be shown at once.

The technique is referred to as 'dynamic Level of Detail', or LOD. Both the geometry and textures used to display in-game characters are scaled, depending on factors such as the distace of the object from the player, and the total number of objects being displayed. Far away objects can be simple, near objects can be highly detailed. Ryzom uses the technique mainly because of the high number of objects on screen at once.

Sure, WoW may not display this kind of degredation. But you need to be objective - the characters in WoW don't degrade as much as Ryzom, because the gfx in WoW are *much* (and I mean MUCH) simpler and less detailed than those in Ryzom. So WoW creates an illusion - due to lower quality models anyway, less degredation is required when many objects are shown.

I can tell you that Ryzom models are far higher quality and more detailed than most MMO characters, especially WoW and SWG. EQ2 may be close, but I still don't think it's better than Ryzom for detail levels.

Also, unless people would like to correct me here, I have seen no reduction in gfx quality since I started playing the release version of Ryzom - my gfx look exactly as they did at the beginning, in my opinion :)

lol as i said, this i know...

And comparing graphics we can do all day, but for gods sake don't mix in WOW in this as you stated wow as very simple graphics and most of them is not even 3d at all.

As an exempel. Take a closer look at a yubo. Rember clearly then i started at relase i was wondering if they doon any thing with the mobs since beta. and was impressed by the high detail still was left on the mobs. Now blury and not clear.

Going sort and look through the tons of screen i got and compare some picture and hopfully i have som what will show you the diff.

PS There is some erly sceens on the rysom site, take a look on those and compere for your self.

Why the sudden comparison do you have a new computer now or something?

I completely understand what your saying and i believe when you get home you will be dissapointed. Its just how the game engine is designed.

The huge amount of detail can also been seen in Dyron (that is where it struck me anyways). I know there is very little to see in the desert, but there are these mobs, they are non-aggro, and somtimes just lie down with their head in the sand, butt pointing up. They have weird legs, like they are plated with pieces of bark or something.
Anyways, some big one of these mobs walked on top of me while I was digging and I noticed they have hair on their belly. No, not a texture. Actual hair, waving with the movement and blow by the winds. And it was not a three piece worm, flat plate with a texture, no it was HAIR! See through, more then one piece, no toupet HAIR!

Then I was actually surprised by my comp, the state of modern games in general and Ryzom specific and I have to tell you, that didnt happen since I bought Starcraft in 1999.
