I just want to know if any other players think that travel is UNDUELY difficult. I think it is stupid that it takes a group of 150 plus to guide a few low levels through parts of the world, and that there is NO other way to get through the world than going through the PR.
I mean if there is NO way, wouldn't a race FIND...or better yet...MAKE a way. I keep mentioning those sky branches. They HAVE to touch the planet SOMEWHERE, and where they do...I think we should be able to climb up on them and travel. Granted...if players can do that, so can mobs (like the Two star orange herbivore mob I saw IN town the other day). So the idea of COMPLETLY simple travel is not in my mind, just another way of getting through to other areas for exploration.
This game has set up ONE player type for HUGE frustration. The explorer in me is SCREAMING, since it takes either a WAY low level character, or the DP is SO huge that you risk getting disheartened by it. And so far NO ONE is high enough level that ONE group of them can fight their way through.
And even THAT is annoying to a TRUE explorer. We don't WANT to fight, that is part of the discription of exploring, TRAVELING, not killing, SEEING not fighting. And not sitting for three or FOUR HOURS waiting for mobs to move out of the way, only to have ONE with an agro range of five TIMES the others that triggers a wipe out.
This is not fun, this is frustration. And that tends to run players off.
Why does travel have to be so difficult?
Re: Why does travel have to be so difficult?
I am not sure exactly what it is your referring to, since way back when patrols were added things have thinned out considerably and travel is not hard. Certain places are more difficult then others surely but there is no safe route to grandma's house to go around the big bad wolf. Exploring by it's nature is trying to find a safe route, and yes it will take patience and skill to be good at it.
As many know, just yesterday I made an alternate Zorai character (Lucidity) to play when it's quiet. I made it from Zora to Yrkanis, solo as level 1 with a DP of 7 (6 of which were in the Matis Desert - Hidden Source) in 121 minutes. I made it safely thru Zorai & Under Springs without being killed, died twice in Fyros within 150m from Pyr to weak Goari's and got rez'd since I was practically in town already.
The only DP I got the whole trip prior to entering Matia was to Blacosis or whatever that named Varinx is when he did a warp. 3 lands with 1 DP is NOT "UNDUELY difficult" as you said.
The "sky branches" you refer to are called "the canopy" and we have yet to discover them in Atys... Maybe if we had better explorers....

Seriously you have good posts and all but that has always driven me insane.
Anyway I think it's great the way it is. Adds excitement and you feel more accomplishment. And plus it's satisfieing being able to go through areas you couldn't before and win if a few things attack you. I don't see why it would kill you to just team with a few other people who want to explore too.

Re: Why does travel have to be so difficult?
There are several explorer types in my guild who have traveled alone through many areas of Atys, including the roots and the Nexus, either alone or with one or two other people. As exploring is now, it's a pastime for those adept at watching the horizons and their radar screens, becoming familiar with the way different mobs move and the routes they take, and knowing when to wait and when to move - fast.lyrah68 wrote:I just want to know if any other players think that travel is UNDUELY difficult. One thing most explorers that I know have in common, though is that they tend to max out their dp before doing a round of exploring. This gives them a sense of freedom, since once your dp is maxed out, you risk nothing by dying.
I do not want to see exploring made so easy that a person can just run from one spot to the other without having to keep an eye on what's around them, without knowing how the mobs move and how to pick out temporary "holes" between agro, and without any risk whatsoever.
As for the "true explorer" label, most of the people I have met who would qualify are harvesters rather than fighters. Their melee and fight skills are well below those required to survive encounters with even the weakest agro mobs in the roots, yet they routinely find their way into places where high level teams can't seem to go without wiping.
Re: Why does travel have to be so difficult?
I wouldn't want to see running through the roots be easy. However, I do think it would be nice to have a fairly easy route from one capitol city to the next.
My main reason for that is to allow people to experience the low level areas of each land before they outgrow them. By the time I made it from Fairhaven to the other capitols, I'd pretty much outgrown the easy areas of those lands.
I think it'd be nice to allow new players some flexibility to see the low level areas of the other lands to give them some variety while leveling up. I do not think new players should be able to make it through the roots or the harder regions of each land. That should be left to the true explorer type.

lyrah, in all honesty, your job-desription doesn't describe an explorer, it describes a tourist

Re: Why does travel have to be so difficult?
No one even got close to my point whydoes travel haveto be so hard that the slightest lag kills you?
I don't know about anyone else, but I never liked the arcade games where timing was everything. I feel like I am playing Frogger when I am trying to explore.
And DP is not my worry, it is the loading time, and travel time back to where I was that annoys me. During my attempts, live server and ATS, to travel anywhere, I ended up spending more time loading than traveling, and what is the point of turning graphics to lowest lowest during exploring? Besides, my system seems to run best at highest highest (I don't know why, but I lag MORE at lowest lowest, like my system is having to "dumb down" the graphics and is having to Chew on that.) And YES I know about the max camera adjustment to client CFG, and yes I normally travel with the camera scrolled out to the point of my character being ant sized (unless plant life and other obstructions make it too annoying or so I can't see).
I do not find sitting for four hours waiting for that "temporary hole" that only seems to be there but in reality there is a "trigger" mob that has an agro range making that hole only an illusion.
I understand NOT allowing harvesting or hunting in "high level" areas, but travel should not be so difficult. This part of my resentment with the Karavan and Kami, if they CAN port you to all of these locations, but they hold out on you...are they truly helpful in anyway?

Re: Why does travel have to be so difficult?
We have yet to discover them because there is no way to get on them. Even putting forth the idea that there is the possibilty is nothing more than a lie.vguerin wrote: The "sky branches" you refer to are called "the canopy" and we have yet to discover them in Atys... I am the explorer type. I have been to all over the four lands. And I can tell you that exploration in this game is not all that people make it out to be. Why? Because as the game stands nothing has meaning to it. Sure you can find things like graves and what not, but there is no way to find out who it belongs to or why it's there.
Re: Why does travel have to be so difficult?
I'm lazy or I'd have soloed all lands by now. I find my skills evading mobs put to good use find excellent materials. If you think PR is a challenge try excellent jungle harvesting. 2 mats...backing off the source, waiting, waiting, waiting till the mob leaves and you go back for two more mats. And all that is aside from dodging agro using a 50m compass as you walk through them to get to the source.
After seeing spending 4 hours in pr and having our group die countless times to see Fist run back and forth 5 times while we got through once put a lot in my head about skill and timing.
If you don't want that, I doubt any game with any sort of competition between players is going to appease you. And 3-4 150's can slay their way through so easily through a 200+ zone that I don't think it's much of a complaint to wait 4 months from lvl 1 before you can waltz through around the world!

Re: Why does travel have to be so difficult?
i've never had any issue going across the land, i can run around most spots by myself, most of the time i die it's due to either bad luck or me not paying attention to what's going on
i used to run from yrk to towerbridge when the game first went live all the time, i had to avoid all the aggro and i did it most times
