Wearing jewelry with hit points - just when do the hp in jewels get used?
Are they to back up your char's hp or do they get gradually bled off in
fighting? I want to know why I should buy rings and whatever.

Jewerly adds to your stats, depending on the set: HP, Sap, Focus, Stamina.
When you equip them, your stats go up, and stay up until you remove them.

The HP on jewerly itself is actually a decay rate. They have ~150 points before they rot and are destroyed. Each piece has 2 different stats. What it gives you, and what it has before it rots.

Looks like this has been answered but I'd like to chime in. Hit points for equipment is an indication of its durability. As you perform actions it damages equipment (known as wear). That wear reduces the item's hit points. Once it hits zero its destroyed *poof*.

FYI, Jewelry (or other equipment) can be crafted with bonuses (HP, Sap, Stamina and Focus). Those bonuses are added to your current stats as long as its equiped.
The last patch has also "activated" the resistance aspects of jewelry. Depending on what mats are used jewelry can increase your resistance to some damage. It doesn't appear to be fully implemented because you can't tell how much resistance a piece of jewelry provides.
