For ATI users with choppy performance after last patch

Post by leone2nd »

Msg to Homies: Evander from US server (cant log friends :( )

On to main msg...Maybe this should catch your attention Mr. TECH SUPPORT?

This is my earlier calmed down and civilized post in Tech Support:

December 23rd, 2004, 07:32 PM

New patch crashes client while loging.
I cant log in game, tried just now after updating patch and client crashes after the character selection screen. Before it crashes the game is minimized and the bug report pops up. no matter which option I choose the game terminates itself and a windows error report generated. Tried many times and every time does the same since this last patch.

This is my rant and flame:

Ya it seems this kind of attitude doesnt get your asttention cause up untill now got only 9 crappy views at that forsaken part of this forum, 3 of them being my own.

The deal is im a trial customer, this is almost my second week!
Already spended more than half a day without being able to use your product due to your fault, suprise me and make me buy it. Chances I will r 50% down now.

Personal oppinion about the bug.: You reminded me what was happening 10 years ago when a game was being programmed having 1 gpu set, or cpu set in mind and didnt care about the rest, I see so many errors that ppl get that seems they exist from this attitude of yours. For a balanced program same errors exist for the majority, not a minefield of errors hitting randomly users that are out of an imaginary "Saga of Ryzom system specs"...(ya and whats that?) You cross system balancing 10 years behind, bravo with that, Mr Traincrash, listen up boyz at Nervax, if you holding your breath hopping this game going to be the Europian rival of the US SWG, dont hold your breath too long, I dont see it happening anytime. Maybe just some loud noise.. which after all..all crashes produce one.

A TRAIN CRASH WAITING TO HAPPEN?

I hope you wake up, and smell the coffee, I dont see many users around bashing u out and for the state this game is in, this means only 1 thing, there arent enough users around!!. Gee.. WoW will get yet another] customer from Ryzom soon, if u dont soon suprise me.

and.. OMG! Im paying a freakin beta!

try the following: start the config tool and change your gfx settings from d3d or auto to OpenGL

Well thank you my friend, I did and it finally loaded, 3 out of 1 though, 3 lockups during game loading, 1 succeded, but now im even more frustrated, I tried the opengl, and not only get a worst framerate hit, I cant even chat in game, all UI turn to a cursor display with no textures in it just blank, u have to hit autorun for the UI to be rentered correctly in order to see other ppls text and your own. Im thinking I was right about Nervax coding having only 1 spec in mind, to save the people from trouble and frustration, they should just add a big fat warning on the website saying:

WARNING: ATI USERS DO NOT ENTER!

and after that just get a gun to their heads and pull the triger, cause their attitude is turning a large portion of the player community away since there are a lot of people including me that dont like Nvidia at all, and trust ATI since they can get more juice out of them comparing to similar nvidia gpu, the worst thing is that this is happening while the game is in this problematic state since a lot of people already turned to other games. Maybe they dont care for cross system support anymore, just getting some xtra bux from Nvidia to balance out their lost paychecks and when they hit a number will cancel the whole project. We ve seen projects being canceled like E&B, the gameplay in this game seems so similar. Thye should have postponed game launch at least 6 to 8 months, Im really puzzled why they chose to launch while it is at this sorry state. My worst MMO experience ever.

Tuned all settings down for opengl on the ATI like AA and AF (disabled) and game managed to get stable for at least 8 minutes although it failed to render the UI and chat occasionaly when the character was stop running and after that crashed again to desktop, this time generating a report, which i couldnt send because the desktop locked its resolution similar with the one I use in the game, and while tried to change back the report had vanished. This time the "SEND" button on the report was not grayed out like everytime I get a report before this patch, thous I cant send them reports, so the future for me is useless, or i suspect the report wont activate the "SEND" button if it detects that someone is using D3D but opens only in opengl, so the Nervax people wont hacve to deal with D3D related problems at all. Great! :(

Not proffessional stance at all. Im very dissapointed.

This time (after the patch in general) I managed to see that they changed the way that items in game are rendered, and I thought it was me cause I feedled with D3D and opengl settings but it was there again in every different config I used. So I guess you get that kind of rendering no matter how you change things, this must the primary reason they screwed D3D and opengl for ATI. So what happened about that test server? At least i sued to be in an MMOG where the Test server was really being used for something and not was not there just for the impressions. EVE Online.

Ok heres the update:

It seems I found a way to get around the problem by turning Vertex shadering OFF in the Ryzom client by the ryzom_configuration_rd.exe but I get a performance hit, although I have enough mem and game used to run fine now it takes much more time to load new items while avatar walks around, and it used not to do so, also it seems that it gobles much more memory than before.

update 2:

Most amazing thing is that i turned Vertex shadering back on and now I dont get the ussual artifacts I used and it runs like before, but with the performance hit that its still there. Probably we got here a piece of bad written code for this last patch. I urge Nevrax to reconsider and use another patch to fix these issues and look more closely to that Vertex shadering and ATI GPU problem. Also more support on ATI cards, the "Nvidia game company aproaching policy" wont be hurt a bit since Ryzom runs better on nvidia than in ATI cards since its been coded on nvidias, anyway i find this marketing tactic of nvidia lame, since they seem to aproach any resource demanding game project and offer freebies and support and kind of hammering it down with a sledgehammer from all angles so when it comes out it cant run in ATIs the way it runs on nvidias, while ATI on the other hand, just make the damn cards that can run everythink. I wished ATI would aproach game developers the way Nvidia does so these kind of problems would stop, or we will end up seeing more people gearing towards game consoles where everythink runs fine since there is only one OS and cpu involved.

Anyway If the reported problem wont be looked at, since the game has lost its ussual smoothness I cant and wont buy it. I would like to hear other reports of the same from other ATI card users, that is if not all gone by now. Thank you.

First off, not sure if you can configure out of game or not. but I know that those that beta tested had a configure tool that worked OUT of the game, and it was very handy.

Second off, I know it is hard to change the defaults for forum view (most have a little drop down box that allows you to set it at ALL from beginning, which when you are NEW...is a very very good idea). But this issue is known, that is why there are TWO video settings.

I have mine set to the Open gl, and battles seen at a distance look like a scene from south park.

I would suggest you get into game and tweek the graphics until you are happy. I would...turn OFF clouds and shadows. And you can live without the ground clutter...for the most part. And even tho the looks are MUCH better at highest settings, I would start as low as you can tollerate, and tweek up until you notice issues and tweek back down one.

the VAST majority of people do not have any issues. PLUS, when you have an issue, contact an IN game gm (average responce time is in the SECONDS range, mind blowing...aint it?!) or put in a service ticket on the main web page. I normally get a reply the SAME day.

There is also something called Klient..it is an IRC chat channel, where GM's monitor the chat. Cerest is in there ALOT and she is very helpful, and has a good sense of humor as well (sure helps me when I am at wits end!). It can be a little tricky getting INTO the Klient channel, but the help is worth the frustration.

drivers would have been my next question too =)
and i have to note, switching clouds on or off doesn't do anything, since the code for them hasn't been active since beta
