Perhaps its different for different mats. I do seeds and amber mainly.
Yeah, the mode 4 in itself is fun, since the risk bar barely moves. The case is quite different when it explodes (which might happen usually when the mode changes right during the explosion to 4). If you're saying that your mode 4 explosions are the safest, then I'm out of words.

Mode 2 is my personal favourite., for the record.

As far as the explosions go, 4 is by far more deadly to me than 0. For example, mode 0 blasts about 1.5k damages to me, but mode 4 up to 2.8k.

Just out of curiosity, what stanzas are you using Eshin? Although I think I get what you're saying about mode 4 explosions - that they don't happen much except for when the bar is already down, but when they do, look out.

from my experiences in game...

source mode 0 = slow health bar drop, faster explosion bar drop, high damage clouds/explosions

source mode 1 = slow health bar drop, faster explosion bar drop(slower than source mode 0), low damage clouds/explosions

source mode 2 = faster health bar drop, slow explosion bar drop, high damage clouds/explosions

source mode 3 = faster health bar drop (slower than source mode 2), slow explosion bar drop, low damage clouds/explosions

source mode 4 = slow health bar drop, slow explosion bar drop, highest damage clouds(300-400dmg per tic)/explosions(have yet to have a source mode 4 explosion not kill me outright, even with hp jewelry on)

source mode 5 = moderate health bar drop, fast explosion bar drop (similair if not faster than source mode 0), high damage coulds/explosions

The higher the grade (basic/fine/choice/excellent/supreme in that order) will result in higher damage clouds/explosions as well.

I generally use gentle speed 3/aggressive rate 5/gentle quality (150 in lakelands, 160 in prime roots), with mat spec and terrain spec. With terrain spec in the prospection, I pull 14 mats on average (with max bonus source time) with a 2650 focus (running out of focus as the time runs out).

Yeah, it's a small miracle if you manage to get that risk bar down under mode 4, but it's instakill time when the mode changes to mode 4 right during the explosion (say like, from mode 1 which you happily let explode..).

At the moment I combine 3 different actions, depending on the grade of the mat I'm digging up (choice, excellent etc.) and changing them on fly, to regulate focus usage. Anyways, aggressive speed 6, aggressive rate 6 and gentle quality stanzas mostly. Nothing else added to the action.

Hmm, reason I ask is I wonder about the question someone raised a while back - if a certain stanzas actually worked better on certain modes. I'm the original all-gentle harvester, so never have experimented with it to the degree you have.

I wouldn't know, what I can tell from my experiments. I mean, haven't really noticed any difference or oddities while mixing speed, rate and quality stanzas between harmful and gentle etc. What I do have noticed is that having gentle as a speed and rate does not make the action, by comparison, as gentle as having only gentle quality in action, the rest harmful. That's the main reason why I just stick to gentle quality and have the rest harmful. And doing mighty fine with that setup.

That's an interesting question, that does some stanzas work better on certain modes. Although, harvesting makes you a bit paranoiac or delusional about things, so I wouldn't be amazed if that would be just some harvester's "discovery" after spending 8 hours straight digging the ground ;) ("Hey! I'm sure that the risk bar just moved a bit more than it used to.")
