Hello everyone...first post from a new player who just got the game today and has played maybe 3 or 4 hours. So far im moving along pretty good and have only made one big goof I think (I bought a crafting kit when I already had one from start up kit..wasted 1100d- hehe)
Anyway....Im a pretty experienced mmorpg veteran. Started with a brief play on UO then 2 years on EQ then on to a couple years on AO and then brief spats on just about every other one out there. So far Im really impressed with Ryzom and enjoying it quite a bit. I can see a few issues I question here and there and a few things feel.....unfinished...but overall the experience has been very positive. Before my questions here is my short list of likes and dislikes....perhaps any of them can be explained by you people who are more savvy with the game....

- Graphics are nice and have a very original feel from what little I have seen so far. Remind me a small bit of AC2 for some reason but they are well done.
- Variety from the start. I love the fact that in the first couple hours of playing I was fighting creatures and looting materials, foraging minerals and things out of the ground and then actually crafting itesm out of all those materials. Quite well done and easy to use.
- Some of the combat animations are pretty well done. The heal, acid attack magic and I made a attack with dual daggers and they all look pretty cool especially for lowbie level attacks. Cant wait to see higher ones.
- The whole stanza thing seems very cool. I dont fully understand it but I made an attack that used the default attack and the increase damage thing and the whole way it works seems very cool especially once I get more actions to work with. Very innovative system. I wonder does building attacks like this actually change the animation of them all?
- The whole crafting menu setup seems real well done. Simple and easy to understand and gives plenty of information once you get the plans to make something.
Dislikes:
- Some things in the game seem a bit too cryptic and I wish there was more explanation. For instance....many of the Harvesting actions just dont make sense after reading the description. I mean...I dont understand what the difference is between the Gentle and Aggessive extracting methods. I mean...I understand that you can cause the spot to go bad fast but...well I just dont fully understand it all yet.
- Some quirky animations....like sitting and standing after sitting....seems a few frames are missing and looks unpolished.
- Music! Where is the music? I thought the game was broke during the chracter creation screens....is there music and its not working for me or is there none? Seems very strange.
- Monsters in the newbie area seem a bit too...thick. I was trying to do the newbie harvesting mission where I had to go near cliff to the south of town and harvest some amber of some sort. Between me and there were lots mobs and many of them I couldnt even outrun. Also many times it wouldnt be just one guy who would get on me so I could get to town and survive it would be 3 or 4. Also on a related note....the town guards in newb land are terrible. They take way too long to attack...they need to be quick on the spot...Im getting killed here!!!
Anyway....I actually have some of my questions I guess in the comments above....but here are a few more.....
- Ive seen some people say "you should be about level 20-30 before you leave newb land and go to mainland". Ok so are they saying 20-30 on fighting or what?
- When you die I see that they do a little exp debt thing of sorts and your stats are low for a bit....thats all right? Nothing else hidden I dont see?
- I started out with the beginner sets of Crafting, Magic and Harvesting. I was using the newb wand thing at first but quickly switched to dual daggers. However....when I cast the acid spell (which I got by buying the second magic pack from fighting trainer) I take it that it is better I have the wand thing in my hand rather then the dual daggers....is there some easy way to swap weapons with a hotkey?
- When making the beginner boots i noticed sometimes the icon would come out green or red etc.... was that because of the properties or something on them because of ingredients I used?
That's it for now....I over did it for my first post....thanks for any help though.
first impressions and questions...
Re: first impressions and questions...
Hi there. Let me see if I can answer a couple of your questions for you...
I've heard that too but unless you have some sort of crafting in the mix your equipment runs pretty thin around 10+. I have a few chars that jumped to the mainland at 15 and are having no problems at all. I think that the L20 is set because skills branch off from that point and also the newbie land is packed pretty tightly with fodder for the developing character.tekkor wrote:- Ive seen some people say "you should be about level 20-30 before you leave newb land and go to mainland". I hope so, but I haven't found it yet. It would certainly make life easier. Anyone know of something we don't?tekkor wrote:...is there some easy way to swap weapons with a hotkey?
Yes, the ingredients you use affect item color. Which is why I'm currently walking around looking like a circus clown. Fear my neon green sleeves!tekkor wrote:- When making the beginner boots i noticed sometimes the icon would come out green or red etc.... was that because of the properties or something on them because of ingredients I used?

I'd like to comment on this. If you are experienced with MMO game *launches*, then "unfinished" would not be there. This is probably the third best NA launch to date.tekkor wrote:Anyway....Im a pretty experienced mmorpg veteran. The system is very complex in all aspects. I fully understand someone not grasping it all in the first few hours. One thing, however, is that the names of the skills themselves define what they do much better than the definition on info.- Some things in the game seem a bit too cryptic and I wish there was more explanation. For instance....many of the Harvesting actions just dont make sense after reading the description. I mean...I dont understand what the difference is between the Gentle and Aggessive extracting methods. kay, I agree.- Some quirky animations....like sitting and standing after sitting....seems a few frames are missing and looks unpolished.
No music in game yet. One thing I'd like to mention tho, after playing Xenosaga, music means nothing. One play through that game and people can appreciate ambient sounds much more. There is no true need for music, as this game is so realistic aside from its setting... do we walk around with music blaring from the sky?- Music! Where is the music? I thought the game was broke during the chracter creation screens....is there music and its not working for me or is there none? Seems very strange.
There will be music, I'm just saying it's very immersive to not have music. I for one, very well may not like when it's finally implemented. To each his own tho. Just trying to give you another perspective.
Well, most of the monsters live in packs. It's just like a real world, with migration and such as well. Some monsters will attack you on sight, some will not. Some monsters will not attack you if you are attacking his brother, some will. There are times when whole herds will attack you as well. It's just a matter of learning what monsters are docile and which are not.- Monsters in the newbie area seem a bit too...thick. Honestly, if you haven't figured the game out - don't leave the noob island. By the time you have a full grasp of the system and the game, you should be high enough in levels to move up. There are a lot of lowbie creatures running around on the mainland, but it gets real tough real fast - and newb armor is basically non-existant on the mainland. By newb I mean anything that is 20 and under.- Ive seen some people say "you should be about level 20-30 before you leave newb land and go to mainland". Ok so are they saying 20-30 on fighting or what?
As for in fight or not... either fight or magic. A low level character COULD handle the mainland, but it's a little more difficult to find critters you can handle.

This is true but there are times that the game feels like it has absolutely NO sounds. I'm all for the ambient bg music, much better than having the same in your face concerto every time you walk into see the trainer, but there also has to be a good balance of meaty sound effects. Ever fought a Clopper? Now thats a great example of immersive sfx work. Give me more of that funky stuff.

I completely agree. Perhaps I did not make myself clear in my post, I think animal noises are part of "sound", but I don't think that *music* is necessary. ^_^smirch wrote:This is true but there are times that the game feels like it has absolutely NO sounds. Re: first impressions and questions...
I, for one, agree with you Smirch. The lack of any sort of soundtrack negatively impacts my experience (thus far). As for concerns as to the quality of the music once it is finally added, I don't think we have anything at all to worry about. Ryzom's music was composed by the same person that wrote Anarchy Online's soundtrack. Anyone that has spent even a little time in that game knows that its musical score is nothing short of spectacular.
I can't wait until the music tracks are added. Hurry up , Nevrax!

Re: first impressions and questions...
The game doesn't need a soundtrack. Just fire up iTunes and stream something good. In Star Wars Glaxies, I got tired of the same stupid soundtrack and effects. iTunes is my friend.azarin71 wrote:I can't wait until the music tracks are added. Hurry up , Nevrax!
