Hello all,
Just wondering which would make a better solo player, 3x magic start (magic user), or a forage craft magic start (melee player).
Which will do more damage, the mage or melee? I'm not sure of which way to start my char, but i'd like to be a damage dealer, and able to solo well, so which will do it better, the mage, or the melee?
Solo Player, melee or mage?
Re: Solo Player, melee or mage?
just my personal experience..... I've always found melee's easier to play at low levels.... but at the same time I've always preferred to play a hybrid of sorts in these types of games.
I know some magic players ingame that are awsome and can deal out some nasty damage and turn around and heal before the fight is done...
Really, it depends on your play "style" more than anything. I find that I personally am not well suited to playing a "pure caster" in this game, and after trying for several days I gave up and made myself some swords....

Up to lvl 30 fighters are way easier as you can skill up on fighting very quick and craft good armor and weaponry for yourself.
Re: Solo Player, melee or mage?
This is exactly what draws a lot of people to Ryzom. The flexibility to skill different trees for different reasons. Play an offensive mage and lvl melee for health bonuses. Play melee and craft eq off of quartered materials.
The way the prereuisites for different skills is great in that I don't find myself wasting sps on skills I'm never going to use just to get something I will. All in all a refreshing and great new character development system.

Re: Solo Player, melee or mage?
Mages have a hard way to go early on in this game. Unforced casting failures, mob-related casting failures, and excessive melee damage while casting make soloing hard as a mage. You definitely rock in a group setting if you have the right link skills, though.
My advice to you if you're going to mage solo is don't leave the starter island at L20. Stay for a LONG time and get those magic skills up first. And get a high quality mage focus as soon as possible after you leave

Keep leveling melee for a while as well for the hp/regen and something to fall back on if you run into an unfearable mob or run out of sap as well.

Although pretty good advice you can also do just fine on the mainland. You just have to learn what you can attack and what you can't. When the downside is dying you learn pretty quick! The other advantage of going to the mainland is access to high quality magic staffs which will make life much easier.
If you do play a mage you'll quickly learn how to overcome/avoid the issues of a mages "hard way". Things like spell selection, editing your spells and techniques like 'mob kiting'.

Exactly. The advantage of mages is that they can kill stronger mobs as fighters of the same lvl if they use the right tactics.
Went to the mainland with lvl 15, killed roaming yubos with the fear-acid-acid combo, made a staff with their eyes and killed springthly yubos for the next staffs. Easy and good exp.

Re: Solo Player, melee or mage?
I'm not sure why you'd want to go strictly caster as you'd be missing some easy skill points from the fighter side. One of the better things about this game is, if you decide to switch diciplines, you're rating isn't a combination of the two. If you're a 30 fighter and change over to magic, you're a 1 mage.
You can also look at the fighter training as a good way to raise your health so you can last a little longer when fear doesn't want to fire and your self heal is already used.

Re: Solo Player, melee or mage?
I found it easy to solo as both a mage and a fighter. One thing you need to realize is that its not worth killing something tough and have a huge downtime than killing something easier and less downtime. For example. I can use the above fear-acid-acid combo to kill something. However I found lower level stuff I can kill with just one acid. In the course of 1 hour I made more xp killing those than killing the tougher monster for 1 hour. If you are looking for higher mats, GROUP. Group xp is close to about 5 x faster than solo xp, and alot less boring. Socialize, there is no gain from soloing in this game.
