sydius wrote:Well the main reason I like this idea is because a lot of people I know don’t harvest to gain mats, they harvest simply to kill off their DP (which they rack up often)…

It would just put a stop to the many people who harvest simply to get out of their combat-caused DP. A lot of people die, harvest until their DP is gone, then go back to fighting. They are only harvesters because they die so often.

And that's a bad thing... why?

At level 100, the light armour craft tree splits into 5 branches. At level 100 the heavy armour tree splits into 6 branches. At level 50, jewelcraft splits into six branches. At level 100, 2 handed weapons splits into 4 branches. Each of those branches has to then be raised individually by crafting dozens upon dozens of items. It can take an entire guild to keep up with one high level crafter.

In my opinion, there can never be too many (even part-time) foragers and there can never be too many mats for sale.

sydius wrote:Even with harvesting at 1/3rd your combat level, it’s much easier/faster to work off your DP harvesting. At least at the low levels I’ve been exposed to.

My harvesting and healing levels are pretty close (+8 levels for harvesting), and it's easier and faster to clear DP in a group with healing than it is to clear it with harvesting. Now when my elemental was 53 and my harvesting at the time was like 135... it would have taken forever to clear it with elemental.

I personally don't think that they should segragate dp into individual skill areas. Some questions that come to mind:

How would one get crafting dp or magic dp?
How would a pure harvester work off dp given to them if attack by an agro mob?
What about explorers and scouts? They typically run up max dp from getting killed. Would they have to fight to burn it off even though they didn't earn it from fighting?

Above all of those questions the only thing that adding complexity to the current system would do is provide yet another way for bugs to happen.

I would very much hate to see them split the dp between a combat and non-combat related pool. Most dp gained by harvesters would fall in the combat pool, since they get killed more often by getting aggro than by blowing themselves up. This would give a serious advantage to a harvester/crafter, who, if they were careful, would never ever gain non-combat dp.

People harvest off dp simply because it is the safest and cheapest way of removing dp solo.

Using magic or melee can remove dp very quickly in a group, much faster than harvesting can in general. But is higher risk generally speaking.

And crafting is the fastest (and most expensive) way to remove dp.

As a Fighter/mage/crafter/harvester, the entire concept of splitting the dp makes no sense, except allow someone who doesn't want to be a fighter/mage to explore and harvest/craft freely without any fear of dp whatsoever(unless they blow themselves up regularly).

well I didnt take the time to read all the way through this one. So I may be abit redundant but here I go.
Should Harvesting work of dp? of course it should. your taking time off from what ever you do and harvest to get yourself back in shape to go at it again.
Or, if your like me and harvesting has your dp at 169k per death. Harvesting is my highest skill, of course I'm going to harvest to work it off...dahhhh
Cut it by half it would probably still be faster than fighting my dp off, but wait a minute...I'm a forager..why do I need another nerf?

Interesting topic that sort of got lost in all the responses :P

As a longtime harvester I jumped out of the blocks early with harvesting... Like I saw mentioned by a couple other folks this presented me a dilemma many times when working other skills. If there was a team wipe while we were hunting I was always hurt more because I was unable to work off my DP by staying with the group.

Now that I understand the Death Penalty more and it makes sense to me, I teleport to my spot in the "Grove of Confusion" and work off my DP and quickly return to my hunt group. I have tried to make DP understandable to all and you can find that information here : http://ryzom.twazz.net/modules.php?name ... opic&t=315

Many unknowingly treat our harvesters and crafters as lesser deserving of certain things, when they are in fact the cornerstone of the economy and the ones that make our best warriors and mages better. This game does not reward multiclassing well. You can be level XXX in any tree and have more skills in that tree but you'll never have more Sap/Hp/Focus/Stamina. Even cross training will not give you enough to do your best skills for any decent period of time. I know I am not the only player that cross trains heavily, yet I NEVER have enough Sap/Hp/Focus/Stamina in any tree.

Melee lvl 120 - Con 25
Magic lvl 120 - Con 13
Craft lvl 120 - Con 7
Harvest 120 - Con 17

As a level 230 harvester I have the HP of a level 155 Melee, and get the Death Penalty of any player of level 230. Currently this is 381,800 per death and nearly impossible for me to work off in any reasonable time doing anything BUT harvesting. The multiplier (as shown in my post on DP) is just too low for me.

All that withstanding, a Warrior/Mage having to use their primary skills to remove DP is just as likely to result in more DP as a gain. Why penalize anyone by not allowing them a slightly more passive skill to remove their DP ? I can pull out my blades and solo Gibbai for 3K a pop, but the multiplier of 9 for my level 90 skills cannot replace the multiplier of 23 I get for harvesting. The same applies regardless how you change the roles and PC's highest skill. On the flip side having a passive skill to allow a reasonable removal of Death Penalty should not be polled on like it's wrong.

Just my two cents...

If my harvesting is 143 and my fighting is 58, i die while fighitng, should i get 110000 dp because of my harvesting level?
sydius wrote:This is an off-shoot from my other poll about DP (Death Penalty). Someone pointed out the fact that (in our opinion) it seems pretty stupid that you can work off your DP gained through battle by harvesting/crafting.

So this is yet another poll. :)

No. Combat DP should be based on the highest of your 2 combat skills (melee or magic).
