Is heavy lag the norm?

Post by marcd7 »

Brand new trial noob here. Just got in for the first time, and was basically frozen in place with lag...on a T-1 connection. Is this typical, or a new problem with the Ch. 2 update?

Not sure, but I definitely experience some lag as well, and I have a cable connection. I turned down some of the settings to Low, and I've found that this helps, but the game still seems to have some issues.

marcd7,

Try pressing N in-game - this shows the Network window. Are you getting any spikes or long periods of high values for Ping rate? My ping is generally around 200-250 (512K ADSL here), which is nicely playable. Sometimes it does spike tho - it can reach 400-600 when the lag is very bad (the game is still running/moving, but jumping all over the place). I have seen, on occasion, my ping reach 1200 - this pretty much locks the game solid. At that ping rate, your game data is taking 1.2 secs to reach the server, which is an eternity :)

A very bad connection will sometimes change the Server Status to FS Lost - this effectively means your connection has been 'dropped', at least temporarily. A period of more than 5 secs with FS Lost usually means you're going to be disconnected permanently - the server (or your internet connection) is probably down at this point, and you'll eventually receive a disconnected message.

However, if the Network window seems to be reporting good values for Up, Down and Ping, but you're game is still lagging, you have problems not related to networking/internet connection. Try turning the details down all the way - the game will look a little nasty, but if the lag disappears and stays away, you may have found your problem.

i had this same problem (new trialer as well) but i blamed it on my bad processing speed for bogging down the game. try these 3 things: 1. lower all graphics settings, 2. close all other progs that could be using bandwith and/or system resources, 3. switch to D3D or OpenGL and find which one is better.

i currently run with only ryzom running + D3D + lowest graphics settings of all on a winXP 1.1ghz that had a bios patch so it performs @ about 500 mhz (thanks toshiba) and i went from getting 1,000+ to 140,000+ ping to 150 to 500 ping :)

I get disconnected every 15 minutes or so with the "FS Lost" message in the network window. My Ping time is normally around 300-500, and I often experience packet loss just before a disconnection (usually 4-12, sometimes it says 100). Ping times never say over 500 even when it disconnects.

I have a 512k adsl connection. I've tried turning all the settings down but this actually decreases the playability (it makes it all stuttery / jumpy). I have an amd xp2400+, ati radeon 128mb card with latest drivers, 1.5gb of ram, xp pro, disabled other connecting programs. I don't get lag like this on other games.
