Questions about the game(formerly: Everquest)

Post by lily123 »

Been playing EQ now for 4 years and just picked this up on a whim. Seems most interesting but I feel sooooooo lost! Heh heh! Appreciate any thoughts from you folks that have played both. Differences? Good and bad. Which Game do ya prefer and why? I am pretty serious about my in game life so I appreciate any tips that you "pros" might have. Thanks all!!

I've been playing EQ for over 2 1/2 years and I like this game because it's a refreshing change. The graphics are beautiful, EQ's are way outdated. Even when EQ did their "revamping" of their graphics, going to this game is like going from the Arnold Terminator to the liquid dude Terminator. You are not so dependent on others to play IE: no buffs (including crack) required (everything is dependent on the way you train your skills and what armor and weapons you get), NO CR!!! The characters are totally customizeable, you can specialize in one or two things or do them all verses having 10 different alts to be able to play other classes. If you choose to do different skills, they all go hand in hand and work with each other. IMO, the people and the community are so helpful and laid back. The guilds all work together in a common goal it seems rather than the cutthroat recruiting I've seen so much of in EQ. Most of all, with all there is to do and NOT being so dependent on others to play as I mentioned before (of course groups are wonderful but not always an option), there is absolutely NO downtime!! As my Mom put it, being able to log on and just play without waiting 2 hours to get a group... what a concept.

I played (and cancled all 3 accounts) EQ for 6 years, had characters that ranged from level 40 to 70 on the accounts, and could pretty much kill anything solo (ok, multitasking the 3 accounts) pre-Luclin.

EQ required you to typically spend 30 - 45 minutes to setup for an event.
Then it required you to (depending on where you setup), fight / move for a minimum of 30 minutes if it was an easy boss, to up to somewhere around 2 or 3 days if you were doing a heavy zone (as in you had to fight through alot of monotinous encounters that were useless)

An average day on EQ was spent with about 45 minutes to an hour of total prep work before you could be productive in any real form.

The economy went down hill fast with the Kunark expansion after they deemed it necessary to have no drop items for about everything in the freaking game, so our fun in Eastern Commanlands tunnel was all but over.

When they came out with the bazaar, things went back up with economy and stayed pretty proffitable for a long time.

Graphics, well, to me they went from crappy to ok, but never really great, Ryzom on the other hand started out Great and is getting better every day.

EQ = look, a mob, kill it, go eat something, come back, kill it again, and you know the loot table, no seasonal mobs, no real purpose other than getting l33t gear.

Ryzom = groups of mobs, migration, change in seasonal mobs, growth, and believe it or not, is larger than EQ when it was first released (has alot more zones that are larger in size)

EQ raids consisted of a few dozen mobs and 1 or so boss mobs, and about 4 hours average raid which was repetitive.

Ryzom raids are awesome in size, consist of the entire zone being invaded with what seems like hundreds if not thousands of creatures, and is very fun.

EQ Events ran by guides or senior guides are scripted but not very fun.
Ryzom Events ran by GM's or Senior GM's are also scripted but they have WAY more room to work and ALOT more that they are able to do, and really make life interesting.

Every item in Ryzom (for now) is player made, literally, if you buy something worth having, a player made it, sure an NPC has junk for sale, but its JUNK if it is not made by a player.

EQ has player made items, but only a few of them are better than most dropped items.

Understand that Ryzom is in its bigining stages, and has TONS of room for growth and expansion.

EQ is done.

Even player ran events are really fun in Ryzom (as proven by the great race yesterday), we have very creative powerful people in Ryzom.

All EQ has is a race to see who can be l33t.

Hope this sums it up for you.
Ryzom is not for everyone, you would need to play this game and see for yourself, none of us can judge for you.
For those who know about today, I have a supprise for you tomorrow.

even tho i completely agree with all of the posts above i think you should receive a warning: currently there are no real quests with story, only missions to carry out for dappers and fame
the real quests do already exist on the test server and will come online either on the 21.12. or the 6.1.
in case they are still bugged when they come online, rest assured, the devs usually fix the bigger mess-ups in very short time(can range from a day to a week)
added to the quests there are heaps of player events and bi-weekly(i guess) gm-run events, which until now have been: invasions, tournaments, fulfilling a certain row of tasks in one land while the other half of the server population is busy in another land, one half of the server pop going against the other in the same land for the same goal

@wayas, she wanted info about ryzom in light of her previous playing of EQ, also, nobody reads the off-topic...

The thread topic is misleading, it's actually questions about gameplay in Ryzom and as such is on-topic in the general forums. I will take my liberty and change the name of the thread.

This game is much different from the average MMO in many ways and it is definitely worth a try. Try it and see if you like it. Just to warn you, it's a bit complicated in the beginning and has a much longer learning curve than most games of this genre. Personally, I have played many MMOs, including WoW and such, and this has been the first in a while to grab my interest in the beginning. Hope this helps.
