How to travel?

How exactly do I travel to other map areas/worlds? Like if im in the jungle place and I want to go to the desert world. I thought I could just run off the edges of the map where it just trails off but someone said you cant.

I hear you have to go through some place called "Prime Roots", very dangerous and maze-like. I haven't seen it myself though.
