I have to agree with him. All experience in the game so far dictates that you are being quite liberal with your combinations. Although Tap is wrong on one point. Turquoise is actually a mix of purple and orange.

It's also a good thing to remember that armor qualities has something to do with colors too, or in which color they will actually appear as. Default quality red armor looks red, no arguments there, but medium quality starts to look more like a salmon to me. It's still red, that's the point here. It's not a product of some sort of "mixing" people keep talking here about..
