hubba1 wrote:First, Ariwen, your question is so vague as to be incomprehensible. As you can tell by the replies, I am not alone in coming to that conclusion.

Second, like Aldrikoy I've been on the Fyros newbie regional chat a lot. We had several veteran harvesters and crafters who were starting a new character and they answered most of our questions, although sometimes they disagreed. The Tryker newbie land was similarly friendly during my tenure there.

Third, I'm going to try and guess at most of your question, so here goes.

A) There is no "wonder mat" or generic do all mat like you get at the start of crafting. You cannot buy any do-all material (mat) from the NPC.

B) Deposits of resources are all over the map, they vary according to terrain, time of day in-game, location, etc.

C) There is no solid agreement among the vet harvesters as to what limit is put onto the materials you can limit in the newbie areas versus the mainland. The theory is that it goes up to QL 50 materials.

That's about all. Ask in regional chat or check the forum guides at the bottom of the main forage page for more info. Good luck.

Oh and next time, phrase a more specific question, thanks.

what is so incomprehensible about"are all choice (red in color) materials on the Zorai refugee island??

With only 4 to 5 people playing on reufgee island who is ther to ask??

what is so hard about those two questions??

I have been on ALL the other refugee Islands, and yes people are helpful. BUT there are so FEW people on the Zorai island that no one stays on the island long enought to learn. I wanted to stay and help the new players, but eveidentaly I am not supposed too.. Maybe that is why ther are fewer Zorai players then the other races, because NO one is on the island to help. I am trying to help. But I am also asking for help. And It seems to me everyone is jumping on my case??? what did I do?? but put in a complaint and then get accused of being Lazy!!!

What is the deal??

Times have changed. I stayed on the newbie island for over a week. I could earn good money and learn many things on the island, but some changes make that less desireable.

Harvesting as a newbie is very difficult. You don't have many abilities that really can help make harvesting easier. You need a wide cone 20-40 degrees to really be able to sweep an area. You need a good deposit tracking ability. Most of these skills just don't come into being for a player until they start getting into their 30's and 40's. By that time, most playeres have gone to the mainland.

I can't answer about Zorai, because I never started there, but all the newbie islands are pretty much layed out the same. I woudn't be surprised it all the mats were in the same place for all newbie lands.

There are choice mats. They are close to each of the towns. Maybe 100m away in some cases. Each town seems to have its own speical resources. One town might have shells. Another might have bark and fibre etc.

When I left the newbie a couple months ago, the highest quality I could get was 20. That is useful so you can make yourself some newbie equipment before you hit the mainland. The newbie island is also much easier to traverse than the mainland. Take your time and enjoy yourself. However, I'm sure it can get a bit lonely. When I was there, it was a thriving community of newcomers and there was even a bit of an economy. Now I'm sure its much different.

Check the harvesting guides, Double tap has one, and I posted one as well.

First off, in "green" regions, during the green months (which in Zorai is when...yep most of the time) you can have trouble seeing the clues. But they are still there, just masked with more GREEN than some can see through (this includes me).

You could use a few tricks:
Number one, start at one town and map using triangulation each material node. To tranangulate, set the compass to target mode by targeting an NPC or a town on the map, or from the list on the compass. Pick THREE towns and write down how far that node is from each....now you can get back to ANY node you have written down...and give this info to other players.

Move in a spiral from one town and map it. Be CAREFUL or you might miss a more stable node of your favorite material.

Know that EACH node is the same...during the same weather conditions, season and time of day. I have had more trouble finding one type of material during one season or the other from land to land this changes. And in SOME regions...it can be hard to tell when seasons changed (umm if there ARE no leaves...how can it be "fall" when what is Falling is leaves?)

Also know that EACH city has one of each slot of materials (fiber, sap, resin, oil, gem etc) but almost always ONLY ONE kind (dzao, silverweed, Moon, Koorin, Hash etc). And that city will almost always be the ONLY city with it.

YES being a Zorai is more difficult. Some people, more than a few, are put off by the mask, others it is another thing or other. So you will have to do ALOT more solo than if you were another race, if you don't like the challange, you might want to change races.

Also, CHOICE and Q20 are the highest materials of any kind...other than mission materials, available in newbie regions. You CAN stay much longer in newbie if you are willing to mine nothing but mission nodes...but I would suggest leaving newbie BEFORE you are high enough level to get "with knoweldge" at level 50.

Well said Lyrah.

Ariwen, I understand your frustration. Patch 1 harvesting changes really didn't help newbies much, and when you are on a ghost town of an island it doesn't help more. I found when I played my old Zorai character that harvesting on newbie island was only easy because I was in the middle of the preorder rush, and there were a number of harvester types looking for mats and willing to share mat spots. Without that, its tough.

That said, one thing to keep in mind in your quest is that the goal of your quest honestly isn't that important. A q20 choice sword is nice. The damage it does versus a q10 storebought piece of garbage is a significant upgrade. But you know what? You can survive on newbie island quite well with that q10 piece of junk. Trust me. I did through 3 characters, leveling 2 of them to 40 before I left the weeny kipees behind. I never paid the 25k or 30k people were asking for melee weapons back then.

And while pre-patch a q20 sword was good enough to fight as a level 40ish melee fighter on the mainland, you'll discover now that q50 is basically the bare minimum to go hunting effectively. Mobs do a lot more damage a lot more quickly, so you need to equalize this by doing more damage yourself in a hurry. Only higher quality weapons will let you do this effectively. And the good news is that given the disaster that's happened to crafting and mat prices, you can find a choice q50 max damage weapon on the vendor for something like 10k once you hit the mainland. I vaguely recall my first q50 weapon ran me 75k. Its good to be a little later.

Finally, I did pull my old second Zorai character out of retirement - the same poor bloke who got alpha striked by a suckling yubo during the post-patch 1 chaos. (Someone claimed I was lying about that - nope, it critted me for 121 damage at level 1 melee. And it was 5 or 6 days till they fixed it = a week in my book.) Unfort, he didn't get developed far enough so that he has much in the way of map markings. But...if you're still intent on that sword, I have some vague recollection that choice shells were up north someplace, bark was closer in, grip west/east of one of the cities, and wood I never found. YMMV.

I would actually not recommend wasting your time outside of the town spots and just try to level up harvesting ASAP for the mainland. Best of luck, and sorry you're having a bad experience. The newbie ramp on the game isn't very fair, but we all got over it.

Thank you for taking the time to give some very good advice.

One things, I might be wrong, but you cant gett a long sword on newbie island unless someone makes it. At the melee vendor you can buy the basic single handed sword, daggers, basic axes, but no 2H swords, axes, ect. That is why I was looking for the choice red mats to help out those on the newbie island and to learn more about rafting before I came to the mainland. this is all since the # 1 patch.

Just out of curiosity, why red color? Weapons do not show the color of the used materials. I think you are looking for specific weapon materials (big shells, anyone) in the newbie islands. I made the experience that it is much easier to come by nice weapons and mats on the mainland though.

There are two melee weapon vendors, one deals in purely 2 hand stuff <you can tell instantly by his selection of npc magic amps> and the other purely in one hand stuff <denoted by the overwhelming supply of daggers>

Secondly, red doesn't mean the best mats in choice, as the colors have different strengths and weaknesses.

My own time as a Zorai was short, and while Tryker and Fyros have thriving starter Island economies <Matis don't seem to craft as much on starter Island>the Zorai, I believe, are the least played race in game.

I saw cone mentioned, but I would personally forgo resource tracking in favor of prospecting range on the starter Island, a good stanza with 10m range and 40 degree cone is going to let you cover a wide area very quickly on exploration. Pick up the Choice only mats credit and make yourself a Choice only prospecting stanza and do a blanket search around your towns and you'll quickly have all your required mat locations pin pointed. Do expect to have to work at least 3 of the 5 towns to get all your require.

One final hint, first add the care stanza to your list of goodies and swap over to it when your heart line starts dropping faster than your prospecting time, so that your resource lasts longer, and stop prospecting when you hit your maximum quality and quanity by hitting ctrl - S. this will help you get maximum yield out of your locations.

Ariwen,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble on the newbie island. I had a character "Somerled" on the Zori beginner island for a week and I tried to be as helpful as I could (I was even called a "spoiler" once).

Harvesting is very doable in the newbie island. Takes a lot of patience and endurance. Some of the things I found:

1. Stick close to town. All mats are within 250m of the respawn. They are concentrated near to entrances of the towns.
2. Ignore the freebie nodes, not gonna find good stuff there.
3. Each town has its own set of mats. Most of the mats are unique to that town (some exceptions because there are 4 types of some mats and 5 towns).
4. Once you find a node that you want, plant a flag. Step back two steps and prospect again. You'll be able to hit that node a few times before it expires.
5. Increase Dexterity and Will as soon as you can. Mixing Harmful and Gentle stanzas increase the payout (and risk). I went with Gentle Speed, Harmful Rate, Gentle Quality.
6. No easy way to find choice except mark it when you do find it.
7. You can save focus and the node with Ctrl-S. Ctrl-S cancels current action. Pull what you know you can get a full quantity, hit Ctrl-S. Wait for the timer (sit or start a new prospect) and hit "Take All" before starting a new extraction.
8. Big Shell and Yana Wood Node are in Sheng Wo. Anete Fiber is in Qai Lo. Oath Bark is in Koi Zun. I found those make decent 1 handed swords.
I can't be more specific than that because I don't have my map with me.

Hope that helps.

Ok, Why Red?? if you check the stats on Materials you will find the beter of the Choice materials are red in color. Big shell will have higher levels for Damage then any other shell or blade material. Oath bark in choice is red in color, Oath bark has a higher damage factor then any of the other choice materials. Ante fiber in red choice material give you a higher dodge factor. So this is why I am looking for the red choice materials, the combinations of dodge and DMG factors makes a better sword.

Yes there are 5 towns on Zorai island, the one in the center has all its exits going to the plains area. the other 4 are in corners and usually have only one or two exits to the plains area. So the corner towns have winding paths going toward the corners of the map and coming back around to the city. Ive been on those roads/paths and have only found like basic to fine materials. I found the Big shell and found fine oath bark, but am having problems finding the choice oath bark, if there is any on the island.

Somerled, I have been looking for you, added you to my friends list I guess the last day you were on. My Character Name??? Arriwen, not very orginal am I, lol. But I didnt know you quit playing. I am the one who used to pla enb also, on the pegasus server.

I played all day it seems, from morning to night yesterday and the most that were on was 4 other ppl besides me. So thats why I came to the forums for help. Had to GM's that gave me different information, got frustrated with a few comments and sorry I lashed back at the ppl who visit the forums. I like the game, and I am trying to learn as much as I can of all the races, and get all my characters lvld up for me, and to encourage other new players. If we as the customer arent there for the new players how will they learn to enjoy some of the challenges this game has.

Thank you all for the advice and help you have offered this far. You have encouraged me to stay on Zorai a little longer to lvl up a little more before I venture to the ML. Maybe I will even pass on some information to other newbies. :)
