In this one MUD I used to play they had frequent all out, 20 players enter, 1 player leaves, brawls that were hosted in these instanced, completely closed off from the rest of the game, dungeons. The event could be kicked off in one of two ways. Either a GM could start one just for the heck of it, or a player could purchase one using Quest Points. Quest Points were incredibly hard to acquire or even purchase. 1 QP could be purchased for 1,000,000 credits...which was quite a bit in this game...and it took 3 to start an event.
When the event was started a system message was broadcast and, from anywhere in the game, you could enter a command saying you wanted to join and then you would be instantly warped to a prep room. In this prep room you could put on your equipment, apply any buffs, and sneer at your competitors. The room would also display an occasional "The event will start in n minutes" message.
When that time had elapsed, everyone present would be warped into a random room within the dungeon and the slaughter would commence. When you died you woke up in the hospital (the games equivalent of a spawn point). The victor got, if I can remember correctly, nothing but bragging rights along with a brief visit to a special room, that could only be reached by winning the bout (it was a rather elaborate room too), where an NPC dubbed you Sir Uber, then you went on about your business.
I really enjoyed those events and would love to see something similar implemented in SoR. The arena is kind of there but would require a few tweeks to really pull it off and be as fun as these events were for me.
