I'm simply in awe...

Post by raynes »

Last night while playing I noticed that my sound was doing odd things. The players around me when hitting a mob kept having different different noise levels. Then I adjusted my speakers and found out why. I have a sound card capible of surround sound, I also have the speakers. Well sure enough the game actually does an incredible job of putting the sounds in their correct places. When other players were to the right of me and in back, they were heard softer and behind me. When they are in front of me, they could be heard from the front. I started to notice that when animals footsteps would come from a distance and walk by, so would the sound. I was amazed. Of course that's not all that amazed me.

I have a pair of 3D LCD glasses that I have used for gaming in the past. The last game I tried them with was City of Heroes. I found out very quickly that the menus didn't work well. Some of the buildings and people were actually 2d objects. It was a hugs disappointment. So tonight I decided to get them out and try them with Ryzom. I was beyond amazed. Everything translates beautifully with them. Menus seem to float in in front and on top of thing. Players and NPCS all move incredibly well. The way the game does distance with a foggin effect... well in 2d it can look kind of fake. With the 3d glassed it does an flawless job.

All I can say is if you want to experience Ryzom as if it were real get surround sound and pick up a pair of 3d lcd glasses. There really is nothing I can say to do it justice.

I have wanted to get a pair of those glasses, I read about them sometime during my EQ days, and that has been EVER so long ago. I wonder if the price of them has fallen from "neat techno oddity" to "Hmm that might be worth it".

I have the surround capable card as well, just didn't like the set up with the stands four feet from the chair (hard NOT to knock the stupid things over) and since I am a woman...I kinda got a thing about visable wires. BUT I heard about a speaker system that is wireless...Who knows, maybe in the after Christmas sales I will find one of those systems and those glasses within my budget.

Glad to hear of your newly discovered enjoyment.

yeah a few games are quietly adding 3d positional audio, ryzom and doom3 were the first two that i picked up on

a few mobos have 2d positional audio built into them, right now i think it's only nforce chipset boards but only the ones with dolby sound cards

before you say surround sound needs 5 speakers and not 2, remember that you only have 2 ears yet you hear in surround sound

I have a 5.1 compatible card and 7.1 speakers. It's nice when a game supports surround sound so I don't have to "emulate" it with the Windows interface and "clone" the front speakers.

I would love to use 3d glasses, but I fried my old monitor playing the original Unreal Tournament a couple years ago. I don't feel comfortable using them anymore. That plus the fact that I have a LCD monitor now. I'm even more paranoid about frying it.

I wanna know where you get some of those and how much they cost. I did a keyword search on the net, and nothing really came up matching.

Edit

Well did some more searching and found them this time so I amswered my own question but thought I would put a link up that I found for others if they wish to see.

When you do a search for them, do a search for stereo glasses and you'll find a lot. :)

Cool thanks I will do that. Oh, but one more question, can anyone tell me do you have to have a certain type of monitor for these to work? I have a CRT but it has the flat screen.

These are the glasses I am using:

I use a standard glass 19 inch monitor. You can probably read up on that site to learn more about what monitors will and won't work.

I have become totally dependant upon my surround sound to warn me of approaching preditors and from where they approach while out harvesting.

The only annoying thing is the Kipee roars when they come over to see what I am up too.

I am gonna look into these glasses just as soon as I get an N52 to replace my aging n50.

This says it requires an Nvidia chipset, will it not work for ATI?
