Is the NA server even IN North America?

Post by tashunka »

Then WHY is my ping around 400 on a consistent basis?
I'm using cable and getting the sort of ping I'd expect from dialup!

If anyone here has a consistently low ping I'd like to hear about it, but I get the idea that the server for our "North American Community" is overseas as well... what's the point of that?

I'm starting to get sick of getting killed because of lag spikes and other latency issues.

I think you may be onto something ... The rumor is that our server is in UK but is in process (couple of months) of being migrated to the US.

I don't know -
a) if this is true.
b) if so, why.
c) eta for migration
d) where Hoffa's buried

Please don't give us a headache with a major flame this early though! :) Patience is a virtue! We all feel your pain ... especially in the NPC infested towns ... but this is a work in progress. Sort of like Kovah's hangover.

a) Unfortunately, yes
b) There were some problems rolling out the server in NA. We diverted to one of the additional farms instead (Yes, we have plenty of backups!).
c) GMs will be testing out the new server from the US starting Monday. As soon as the new server is deemed stable, the current server will go down, and all character data will be transferred over - if there aren't any problems, expect that to happen next week. It was decided that it would be a very bad idea to disrupt the current server over the weekend, so we're giving some extra time to the server techs to tune it.
d) Try the Hudson, I hear it's a lovely temperature this time of year ;)

There will be an announcement before any of this happens, so just keep an eye out for it for more info.

Thank you for the quick and clear response, Virgil! It's great to get concise, prompt info from a Developer (not accustomed to that as an SWG player) ;)

Sorry if my post sounded like a flame, it's honestly the only real issue I've had so far.

I appreciate the info, and the good news! :D

Yes, the response is nice. Results will be better. I can barely play due to lag issues right now. If the server move will help, great. Otherwise, if there are any extra lag-fighting tips out there for those that meet and exceed the recommended system requirements, let them fly. It gets hard to target when the lag spike takes your cursor over your target flies behind you before you can react.
