From a newbie mage I have a couple questions...
How long is the wand that we get as a new character good for? (When should I find a new one?)
How does spellcrafting work, and how do I do it?

Thank you all.

General, very general, rule of thumb is to keep your gear ~10 above your current level; however, if your current gear is still working well for you then use it until it breaks (everything breaks over time) or until you think to yourself "I really need something better."

Do you mean editing a spell? Right click on a spell you have and toy with it, add options, change options, add credits and change credits. You can also click on an empty slot in your hands window and build a spell (or any action) from scratch.

You need three things:
- You need to be able to craft, if you cannot craft then you need to learn the craft starter from any of the three non-craft trainers (you'll need to buy an armor tool from a melee merchant if you want to craft armor)
- You need to learn the melee crafting skill and buy a melee crafting tool from the melee merchant.
- You need to learn the magician staff plan (usually second item to the end in the craft trainer's list)
After that it's simply a matter of gathering the right materials and crafting your new staff.
Re: Magic Questions
Thank you very much.
I do have a remaining question about the spellcrafting.
It said in the Mage Guide to not buy premade spells after level 20. That's why I was asking about spellcrafting. How are you supposed to obtain spells after level 20?

You'd wanna train the new spell components instead of a premade spell, both damage (power) and credit upgrades. The idea is that you save skill points as you won't be necessarily needing the components that comes with a premade spell, only training the upgrades will get you what you actually want.
That's the case, unless I'm horribly mistaken (not much of a mage, that is).

Basically correct. I always check the premade spells (right click info) to see what credits they have. If they have a credit I want, I learn it, if not or if I can get a better credit seperately I don't learn it.

How do you get a credit/spell seperately? Does a spellcrafter make it?

There is no thing called "spellcrafter" in the game. Please explain what you mean with it.
It is quite simple: Spells have a effect, which cost has to be payed by credits. These credits can be sap, hitpoints, a reduced range and/or an increased casting time.
Acid 1 has a cost of 3. So you need credits with a total amount of -3 to counter this cost. Which are range 1 (gives -1) and sap 2 (gives -2).
This means the spell is made out of 3 parts:
- acid 1 spell effect
- range credit 1
- sap credit 2
At lvl 1-20 you can buy only the premade spells. From lvl 21 on you can still buy the premade spells, but you can also buy the spell effects and the different spell credits seperatly if you want. But only from lvl 21 on, before you can not do this.
You can see what you can learn when in the action progression screen. Hit "A" to open it. Click on the "+" before fight, magic, etc to see the next tree lvl for a profession.
Re: Magic Questions
I started with only one magic spell, "Heal", as I only had one magic pack selected. In order to get magic xp, I need to heal other characters that are involved in combat. My question is, do I need to be 'ganged' (party'd) with the character to gain the xp, or can I just target someone randomly and heal them for xp?

You need to be in a party in order to get exp, unless you have someone as a meatshield and kill the mob while healing the meaty (or something as "cunning" as that ;P).
People usually don't need healers at lower levels, so getting 2 magic packs at start is a way to go, to get some magic levels first that is. (Granted, you can't know that if you're a first timer)

Thx for the quick reply!
