i see them more as the great oracles of the game
And they are really nice
My newbie findings of Ryzom
Re: My newbie findings of Ryzom
sorry - I expect a lot more.
Who are they?
Why are they there?
Why do they not roleplay - is this a roleplaying game or not?
and if it is why do they not encourage others to roleplay?
How do their characters fit into the world - they are obviously characters of long standing (hence why they are so strong, so skilled) so where have they been? What have they been doing? eg Where do Flump and Flipple fit into the Tryker world?
If they are OOC helpers why don't they have a LOT more power?
could be I've just misunderstood what this game is about - I thought it was about playing a character from one of the four diverse realms, finding your way in a world beset with kitins where two mysterious other races, the kami and the karavan, exist. At the moment I'm not sure why these two races are there - why they charge us money to teleport us around the realm, or where they stand with regards to the kitins - they obviously have superior technology but I haven't heard reports of them helping out in raids etc.
Also there's no mention in the manual of a group of oracles (the guides) and I can't get a good handle on what they are doing in game besides acting as moderators. Now and again they seem to turn up and stand around, helping people with tickets, and now and again they make some half hearted attempt to roleplay. (for examples see the Wormbreath and Shaman Oba conversations)
I would suggest that Nevrax set some clear boundaries around what their role is. If its an OOC role to help players then give them more power. This half-way house role doesn't work at all for me, as it doesn't convince me of their authority in either position.
At the moment it looks like the whole roleplay side of the game hasn't been thought through or particularly developed in any real sense. Very disappointing for me, especially when the region chats are full of OOC conversation but no actual roleplaying.
As for 'the guides are really nice' - ah well then. Forget everything I just said.

lol - hehe sorry - you were right.
Re: My newbie findings of Ryzom
I've been playing this for a week now and as the first poster said I'm starting to get a bit frustrated with the leveling.
I spent yesterday evening with someone called Pebbles - we were team foraging. They were prospecting and protecting the source while I picked it up.
It was excellent working as a team we were having a chat at the same time. We got a load of mats and each got a couple of levels. However, I was reaching for my paper back at the same time!
I play HL2 and its always on edge - your always having to concnetrate.
Same with games like Joint Opperations - again your playing as a team. And things are always on a knife edge. In that enviroment however - there is no progression.
This is my first MMO I played UO some years ago for a couple of weeks. Ended up playing too much and deleting it . I'd realised that I could play it in a window on my work PC - painfull.
Like the first poster - if the content improves and if the game is still around in 3 months time - I'll comeback and try again.
I like the way there is never a restriction on the number of paths that you can take! I just find doing the same thing again and again is something they created PC's to stop not make you do.
I've been looking at trying SWG - especially with the New upgrade that allows you to balance the FPS action junky and the tactical Civilisation player within me.
Hope this game keeps on going and keeps getting better
