Just a quick FYI -- The penalty to crafting from the armor you wear is scheduled to be removed in Patch One (if it finishes the test cycle without issues) or it will follow between patch One and Patch two. We understand your frustration.

The CMs have further notes about Patch One now and they will be posting the information over the weekend.

Crafting is not what I thought it was going to be. I spend my time hunting and pull up pretty much average resources and am not getting far. I basically decided to make a pure mage. This fella had all 3 magic packs in the beginning. I also wanted to do some crafting on the side to make my own gear and staff. However as I am noticing, its either one or the other. 50 points to get crafting, 30 for a pattern style. Thats kind of harsh penalty to try and be resourcefull. With that and the fact that you have to pay another 50 to even harvest the GOOD resources.

It kinda makes it tough to be worthwhile. I dont want to pay inflated prices in the market, or from characters. I can make my own and if I join a guild, help them out with my skills. I dont mind the effort, but since it pretty much costs a hell of a lot to get it going right, it kinda seems like you can only be a jack of all trades and master of none.

Am I seeing it wrong? Can I be effective at crafting and be a powerfull mage since that will be my focus? I would just like to make my own gear is all :)

fellgrim wrote:Perhaps if the manual had something in the Crafting section, that callled out that particular issue re: armor causing failures...really, I usually don't feel that I have to give a game manual lawyer-level scrutiny to make sure that I'm not totally screwing up game mechanics for myself.

At best, it's unclear. All the info is there, but not well presented in my opinion.
In the game, go to HELP-Interfaces-my statistics-misc-total malus. Manuals are typically limited, thats how they make big bucks on "strategy guides"...

There you will see this :

Satchi, if there is a penalty (recently added I might add) for harvesting in heavy armor, it should remain in both or be removed from both... for the same reasons

Ok when making something, you need to check the stats of the materials. Some have better protection rates than others. It depends upon whether or not you want a HIGH dodge factor or high parry or a high protection rating at ALL cost.

First off, pretty much the store bought materials are going to STINK, and I mean STINK on ice. They are for those with the dappers to burn and want to level NOW!

Things that help with your crafting is...Number one, do NOT wear medium or heavy armor when crafting...light is ok..the others hurt your skills and harm the outcome.

Second off you can mix kinds of materials (Buo fiber with shu) but NOT grades or qualities (Fine with choice or q10 with q15) well you can, but the outcome is all goofed up. For the best quality and outcome...don't mix anything. (all fine grade and all q20 of the different materials to make the armor).

I know the different materials are confusing, LOL I was in beta and STILL don't have a completed accurate map of where to find which materials in Tyker's newbieland.

Just slow down and realize...the only person you have to race against is yourself. This game will be there in a month, or two, likely even in a year or two. And with 250 "levels" in each of the classes...there is PLENTY to do and see on the way there.

I would recommend harvesting with a friend, maybe not exactly in the same area. That way when he needs something you have...and you need something HE has, you get together and swap out.

PLUS...if you want to hurry up and get stuff done...try specializing...In other words ONLY work on and add skills to Armor crafting for instance. To hurry up and actually "make something useful" just add points into patterns you will use and make SURE you don't spend points on stanzas you already have in another skill or are just about to get with another skill.

I know the stanza thing is complex, but it helps you have nearly infinite skills. Everyone I know has asked for a skill system that allows them to NOT be a clone...well Saga has DONE it.

I suggest you read the guides on the forums, and visit some of the fan web sites. I found some useful info both on these forums and the ones on fan sites. It might help make sense to you to find a materials stats table and play around with which materials you need to make the armor you want with all the stats you want.

Also...if you want FAST crafting and Harvesting, with the least headaches...I hate to say it, since I love the race, but Tyker is NOT for whimps. I would say either umm Fyros or Matis is better for "learning curve". Some materials are just MUCH easier to get in those newblands than in Tyker newlands. Or maybe I was just so dense during beta or they might have added a few more spawn nodes that I haven't found yet.

I wasn't one of those that was in your area, but I DO understand. LOL Try this...when you get mad or frustrated...find a Yubo and tell him about it...at the end of a weapon. LOL helps me.

It also helps to have another player/crafter/harvester that knows a little bit more than you and has patience on your friends list. From what little of the game I have seen in beta and since release...Friends/guilds are VERY important.

Plus I have LOVED the community so far. I haven't heard ONE person screaming in open chat about kill stealing...LOL other than guards and Kami/Karavan KSing them.

*Hug* you will be a great crafter one day...if you keep plugging at it, and don't expect your leveling gear to be worthy of a Yubo warrior even. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and make garbage and sell to the merchant and take the loss.

Also try to find an overseer and do the missions that you have the patterns for...so far all the missions I have seen have been worth the effort.

And to the one that said that Ryzom's manual wasn't the best...Umm every tried to read an EQ manual. LOL those manuals are not worth the time it took to typeset and print them, nor the trees they wasted to print them. LOL and the fabric maps that came with the Kunark release. There are zones on that map that STILL don't exist, I spent WEEKS trying to find them, only to have people laugh at me for trying.

For instance, take the manual, look at the back page, TA DA keys that are premapped. Did EQ have that? I don't remember them doing it.

And take the Horizon's manual, they had TONS of special features that are STILL not in the game...over a YEAR post release. No dragon lairs, No customizable crafted armor or swords. Sure your character was HIGHLY customizable, but your armor, for all bipeds(non dragons) is EXACTLY the same. They look like uniforms for pity sake!

From what I have read of the manual, it is good for the basics (which I concider to be the first five to ten levels), which you can mostly do with the newbie junk and just puttering around your "birthtown".

I don't expect a game manual to pull me by the nose through the first 50 levels or so or have the detail of some of the game guides (most of the Prima guides were about as useful as the EQ manual in the box, best used as FIRESTARTERS!).

The guide might not meet with your expectations, but it surpassed mine. Normally I buy a game and scan the manual for a good laugh. This manual I actually learned something and I was in beta...Got to 39 harvester/25 crafter/20 fighter/15 mage...before the end of beta. And all that in a bit over ONE week, and a rather busy one at that real lifewise.

Don't think I feel you aren't entitled to your opinion...just don't think that all players agree.
